It was weird. The big quake hit at 3.00am local time, and I happened to be awake. Staying with my brother in his flat on the 5th floor of an 8-floor block of flats, on one of the higher hills of Jerusalem. Felt the building sway in waves, several times back and forth. First thought was 'wow, Storm Barbara is really strong!', second thought was 'maybe it's an earthquake?', third thought was 'it's stopped now and I'm really tired so might as well get some sleep'. I'm not very bright at 3.00am! My brother slept right through it. Next morning the news was all about the Turkish quake, so we got off very lightly in comparison.

We had a quake here in Canberra back in 1977. There is an important fault that runs nearby. In the middle of the night there was a massive cracking sound. My nearest and dearest woke up going wazzat???!!! I just came to and went "It was just an earthquake, go back to sleep." Next day our double brick house (the kind that huffing and puffing wolves can't blow down) had some nice cracks in the upper walls.

You have daffodils and crocus in the south? Here in the wild North Virn's daffodils haven't woken up yet , but the snowdrops are looking good.

Have a word with Wordsworth about his hosts of daffodils!

At least his were the lovely wild ones, not the enormous yellow things that people call daffs these days. But he has a lot to answer for round here. Blimmin' tourists!

It's so cold - we're even expecting snow down south tomorrow. Sad
The daffodils and crocuses (croci?) are shivering. As am I.

Glad you can be here Travisina even if you're feeling cold. We're having Summer at last. Daffodils and crocuses won't be unhappy with snow. Ours barely last anymore.

Did you have a good trip?

I've just started.

I had a lovely trip to Israel - but it was SO COLD THERE AS WELL! Storm Barbara, with torrential rain, sleet and freezing temperatures. And of course the central heating broke down in my Mum's retirement home, so the shop across the road did a roaring trade in hot water bottles.
Oh, and we got part of the Turkish/Syrian earthquake. Approx 5.8 in Jerusalem, swayed the buildings, though no real damage. And then several smaller earthquakes of our own, over the next few days, mainly down the Jordan rift valley. Felt quite Biblical, with all that going on.

That sounds scary.

That does sound scary. Glad it wasn't worse.

Fantastic! Let me know when you're going to be in London, it would be great to meet up again. You going to ABBA again...?

Where else would she be going?

If there's a meet-up in London, please let me know. It would be nice to put faces to the posts!

Oooh I certainly hope so. My attempts to meet up last time all fell apart. But I have more advance notice this time, so hopefully we can organise something.

Also, I hear some B7 cast and crew might be going to the Brit Sci-fi but I can’t seem to find anything about when or where??

I'll ask the Supreme Commander - I've been out of the loop for a while and have no idea what's going on.

Although I can’t talk, I slept through an earthquake here some years back, although I had did have a good excuse - I was having surgery and was under anaesthetic. LOL It wasn’t till I came round that I found out about it. Fortunately, it wasn’t bad. In fact, I don’t think we were the epicentre.

I don't especially like this episode. But I am now toying with the idea that the limiter might have been designed by the Federation to do this - it keeps a violent prisoner sedated, but can be triggered to drive him beserk. He can be turned from a meek animal to a killing machine in seconds. It is breaking down insofar as it is not actually being triggered by the Federation (or is it?) but it is feature, not bug.

Interesting theory. I think it credits the Federation with more advanced tech than they actually seem to have - was Gan's limiter experimental? We never hear of anyone else having one, or being threatened with getting one (unlike eg being turned into a Mutoid).

That would be my theory. It was an experiment, it didn't work very well, and they shipped the surviving subjects off to Cygnus Alpha.

Yes, it's the cracking sound which is the interesting bit, I find. The Earth is being ripped open or crashing together.

Needless to say, several of my Syrian friends in Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras are still living outside in the cold. Fortunately, my friend Fiona had bought her 'family' a whole building which seems to be sound.
