Sheesh! (shakes head).

Makes it sound like a hobby! Dear oh dear.

Sort of not-quite on the subject of bells, one of the most evocative sounds in Jerusalem are the Muezzins at dawn. I was so disappointed to find out that most of the time it was a recording, rather than an actual person!

Muezzins these days . . . But that sounds wonderful.

This room in Liberator with the balsa wood and paper dome thingo is interesting. Wonder what it's meant to be?

I've wondered whether it's some kind of engine room. It doesn't look like storage. Maybe it's the wardrobe room, and that's the Random Costume Generator?

It looks as if it should spin, a bit like Slave.

Maybe it does when nobody's looking. Maybe it's inhibited by the presence of life forms. Does it talk to Zen?

They must have enjoyed themselves finding the most unlikely recordings for Sarkoff to revere.

There's a section in the original script, that didn't make it on screen - but IS now in the novelisation - about Sarkoff having a cigarette case in his collection and explaining to Blake that people used to smoke.
Given that Terry was himself a heavy smoker (it's what did him in), and how commonplace this was in the 70s, it's quite remarkable that we only ever see one person in B7 smoking.

Interesting too, that the sole smoker appears very late on, in series 4.

Except when you're in the village in the middle of Winter and the muezzin has a cold...

Best one is the muezzin in the Sultan Hassan mosque in Cairo. Unbelievably beautiful.

Um…. OK…..

My dentist had a notice about joining their Dental Health Prevention Programme. Always worried me.

LOL Classic.

When I was working, they used to semi regularly send everybody off on harassment refresher courses. I always wondered why they were so insistent on making sure everybody knew how to harass people. LOL

Muezzins these days . . . But that sounds wonderful.

There's a Jewish festival (Shavuot = Pentecost) when it's traditional to stay awake studying all night and go to prayers at dawn. There was one year when it fell on a Sunday, and we walked to the Western Wall through the Old City. What a wonderful mix of church bells, muezzins and Jewish prayer songs! If only it could be like that all the time. Sigh.

Many people only 'do' pharaonic stuff. Definitely do all the Islamic stuff as Cairo was the only major city not wrecked by the Mongols and so preserves things you won't see elsewhere.

It's really well done. I remember being thoroughly surprised at the reveal first time I saw it, and it's nice to rewatch with that knowledge to see how cleverly it was hidden throughout the ep. Like a well-crafted detective story.

Seriously, though, you do wonder how much of the stuff preserved in museums was the 'Blow the Wind Southerly' of its day. If you brought the original owners there they would be saying 'but why would anyone want to preserve that?'

Conversely, I love old ephemera. Things like old travel posters and train tickets in the Transport Museum. Things that at the time, people never gave a second glance at, but now evoke times gone by in a way that statues and monuments never do for me. The stuff of everyday life.

Going back to Cairo...

The one room I used to take people to in the Egyptian Museum was one with things in it like combs and little doodles on limestone. People like all the gold and stuff but they also like to see themselves reflected in people from the past. Despite all the weird ways they think others may have behaved, they get to see that people have been the same forever.
