Thanks for the congratulations. I'm alternately scared silly and in the zone. Just trying not to look like all the other designers' grandmother.

Very strange!! Sarkoff says he can live with a political assassination. There’s something seriously wrong with that sentence. LOL I have been reading part of the confession of one John Hall to the assassination of the Duke of Gloucester in 1397. The assassins tell him that Richard II wants him dead, and he (according to the account) acquiesces rather like Sarkoff does here. Then they get him a confessor, he confesses his sins, and they kill him. Very weird, by our standards. |

Hello everyone. I wasn't expecting to be here today, as I was supposed to be at a church synod meeting, but yesterday the minister decided that she didn't fancy driving all the way to Rotherham through the (potential) snow, and that we would attend via zoom - so I have just time to watch this before it starts. Very happy, as I rather like this episode - I like President Sarkoff as a character, and the wood and the folly are delightfully weird. Hi Anne! Amazingly, this Saturday is an oasis of not having any appointments, so I can be here too. I like Sarkoff, though I also find him quite annoying. Tyce should be President, she'd get things done! The wood and the not-a-folly are still delightfully weird - we did a location outing to Quex Park a few years ago, and it's amazing how unchanged it is. Our tour guide was at great pains to stress that Waterloo Tower wasn't a folly but a bell tower! Bell tower = folly with bell in it? Excellent - thank you. It's a secular 12-bell tower - from Wikipedia: In 1818, the Waterloo Tower was built on the grounds of Quex Park. It is a bell tower built by the owner of Quex Park, John Powell Powell, who had an interest in change ringing. Waterloo Tower was the first twelve-bell tower in Kent. |

The Quex Bell Tower has twelve bells, actually. Unusual in that it's not attached to a church - presumably it was mainly for campanologists to have fun!

It's the combination of things that are completely universal and human and things that are utterly alien that always gets me about the middle ages (and, before that, about ancient Rome). |

Sort of not-quite on the subject of bells, one of the most evocative sounds in Jerusalem are the Muezzins at dawn. I was so disappointed to find out that most of the time it was a recording, rather than an actual person!

Of course his acquiescence must be coloured by the fact that he is alone and faced by a dozen burly thugs - but the logic that it is one thing to kill a man, another to damn his immortal soul, is very much of its day. |

John P liked the sound of bells, and these are for the pleasure of campanology without any religious attachment. I done a bit of that in my time...and it's exhausting - concentrating on remembering the Method (or listening to someone shouting the order of the bells on each round) while trying to keep a great big lump of metal swinging at exactly the right speed and timing... fun, yes, but no wonder one retires to the nearest hostelry afterwards. It's the combination of things that are completely universal and human and things that are utterly alien that always gets me about the middle ages (and, before that, about ancient Rome). Yes. Loved it. Started when I was 16 when another (much older) artist couldn't do the job. It got me pocket money when I was at uni. The best thing was seeing a real hempbreak in Lyme Regis last year. I'd painted them (they're rare) and seen them on TV. Seeing a 'live' one was the best. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

I love that Blake has a reason for trusting Vila. I think of this when he says at the end of series 2 that he’s always trusted Avon. |

Thank goodness, we won’t have to hear Blow by the wind Southerly again! LOL Aw, it's a classic! They must have enjoyed themselves finding the most unlikely recordings for Sarkoff to revere. There's a section in the original script, that didn't make it on screen - but IS now in the novelisation - about Sarkoff having a cigarette case in his collection and explaining to Blake that people used to smoke. Given that Terry was himself a heavy smoker (it's what did him in), and how commonplace this was in the 70s, it's quite remarkable that we only ever see one person in B7 smoking. Those must be the most inefficient Federation guards ever - presumably guarding Sarkoff was where you sent all those incompetent troops you couldn't get rid of.
