Come on, troopers, you can run faster than that thing. And it's burning a lot of oil.

What's wrong with 'Blow the wind southerly'???

The Quex Bell Tower has twelve bells, actually. Unusual in that it's not attached to a church - presumably it was mainly for campanologists to have fun!

That's exactly right. John P liked the sound of bells, and these are for the pleasure of campanology without any religious attachment.

Very strange!! Sarkoff says he can live with a political assassination. There’s something seriously wrong with that sentence. LOL

I have been reading part of the confession of one John Hall to the assassination of the Duke of Gloucester in 1397. The assassins tell him that Richard II wants him dead, and he (according to the account) acquiesces rather like Sarkoff does here. Then they get him a confessor, he confesses his sins, and they kill him. Very weird, by our standards.

I love that period in history. Helped along by having been an heraldic artist for years. What the rich folks went through to get somewhere.

The heraldry is amazing - that must have been a great job. It's the combination of things that are completely universal and human and things that are utterly alien that always gets me about the middle ages (and, before that, about ancient Rome).

They must have enjoyed themselves finding the most unlikely recordings for Sarkoff to revere.

Sort of not-quite on the subject of bells, one of the most evocative sounds in Jerusalem are the Muezzins at dawn. I was so disappointed to find out that most of the time it was a recording, rather than an actual person!

Gosh, how extraordinary. But does rather support the idea of Sarkoff behaving the way he does.

Of course his acquiescence must be coloured by the fact that he is alone and faced by a dozen burly thugs - but the logic that it is one thing to kill a man, another to damn his immortal soul, is very much of its day.

I done a bit of that in my time...and it's exhausting - concentrating on remembering the Method (or listening to someone shouting the order of the bells on each round) while trying to keep a great big lump of metal swinging at exactly the right speed and timing... fun, yes, but no wonder one retires to the nearest hostelry afterwards.

Yes. Loved it. Started when I was 16 when another (much older) artist couldn't do the job. It got me pocket money when I was at uni. The best thing was seeing a real hempbreak in Lyme Regis last year. I'd painted them (they're rare) and seen them on TV. Seeing a 'live' one was the best.

There's a section in the original script, that didn't make it on screen - but IS now in the novelisation - about Sarkoff having a cigarette case in his collection and explaining to Blake that people used to smoke.
Given that Terry was himself a heavy smoker (it's what did him in), and how commonplace this was in the 70s, it's quite remarkable that we only ever see one person in B7 smoking.

Those must be the most inefficient Federation guards ever - presumably guarding Sarkoff was where you sent all those incompetent troops you couldn't get rid of.

Interesting too, that the sole smoker appears very late on, in series 4.

Except when you're in the village in the middle of Winter and the muezzin has a cold...

Best one is the muezzin in the Sultan Hassan mosque in Cairo. Unbelievably beautiful.

When I was working, they used to semi regularly send everybody off on harassment refresher courses. I always wondered why they were so insistent on making sure everybody knew how to harass people. LOL
