That sugar ring around Cally's glass dates it, too!

I like the early Culture novels.

Deeta's grateful that Max has explained about the mind discs.

He thought those after dinner mints tasted funny.

Following the sopron adventure, she's decided to check out her rock & crystal collection.

What is that she's drinking? Looks like blood!

Well I mean look at this spread...

People are always going on about the treasure room on the Liberator but the real treasure was the alien drinks room

Anxiety about VR and its consequences was very prevalent in the 80s, as far as I remember - but this is a very early example.

Brilliant book! Dark but playful at the same time. I have it here within reach, along with most of his SF! Feersum Endjinn is my favourite.

And presumably Vila organised it all, which meant he must have had access to it all the time.

Sound like a CSO (chromakey?) issue...

I think the silver outfits are possibly the worst thing about this episode.

A pity Obsidian isn't back yet - she's probably collected most of that glassware by now. I wonder if there's anything she's still looking for?

What an idiot of a Tarrant. He could have kiiled him right there.

Also, note the bowls of otters' noses, ocelot spleens etc.

What - both of them silver?

37m: Tarrant's brother and his opponent face off in the virtual world in a quick draw. He loses. Everyone watching experiences. Vila is so horrified he pulls off his VR patch.

Great little Vila moment. A great moment over all. Very serious, very impactful. You feel the planets watching.

The uniforms are one of the less successful elements of the episode (in case you are tired of me praising it)

I like how Tarrant comes out of the spell when the disc is ripped from him. Some of the other reactions (like Vila's) look too slow, more actorly than emotionally in the moment.

Yes her collection of B7 glassware is impressive.

They are rather like silver matador's outfits. But again there are these annoying exaggerated epaulettes.

dodgyville
42m: Avon shepherds the gang through the detective work and they each contribute to realising the opponent was a robot.

Suddenly the episode becomes a murder mystery and Boucher is in his element. It's great episode for Servalan. Plans within plans and befitting her stature (sometimes I wonder why the President of the Galaxy is walking around a field with four troopers)

No, the trim, red and black.

Maybe we could encourage her to display her B7 glassware when we finally get Tycecon II (HINT),

Obsidian's been trying to find a good way to present it. I was wondering if it would be possible to do a B7 recipe book. There's not a lot of food mentioned in the show (mangan stew, anyone?) so it would have to be recipes based on situations or punny titles (Breakfast of Kairos, etc).

AnneArthur
The tongue-in-cheek re-use of the set is also fun.

Joe Dredd
A return to the viewing gallery set. This time however, no stars. If it is all a computer simulation there's no reason why it couldn't have a moving space background. I hope the Blu-ray addresses this when they get to it.

Personal protection, show of strength, likes having men who do what they're told... and every episode she's in is a great episode, despite the efforts of the BBC, script, other actors etc etc. (Maybe I've gone and given myself away again...)

47m: Tarrant challenges the robot to a duel and it takes place inside a virtual space liner.

The space liner is one of the more successful sets ever to appear on the show and they get good use out of it (opening sequence and this).

Although watch out for Vervoids I suspect in the hold.

framecaplib.com/b7lib/images/death/death001.jpg

Also want to highlight the planetary vehicle. So simply done but soooo effective.

From the worst production values of all time (the camera zoom on the Moloch city drawing last week) to some of the most effective. Death-watch for the win!

"As ever, Dayna, gaudy but effective."

This is the second time Boucher uses the "gaudy but effective" line.

He does a similar thing with other lines - "scruffy bag of bolts" appears twice in S4, we get "X or Y, the choice is yours" twice, etc.

AnneArthur
And ends with Tarrant and Avon unexpectedly in harmony - a purely temporary condition, however.

49m: Tarrant vapourises the robot, destroying evidence the fight was ever rigged so the two planets don't go to a full scale war. Servelan is foiled. Everyone goes home (except Tarrant's brother)

So that was Death-watch. I love it so much

Theoretically, if Tarrant gave Vinni time to turn round, he would also have given him time to shoot and kill him - but that's a niggle. There is so much that is good in this episode.

I'd say her plan is delayed, rather than foiled...besides, she's already busy setting up her next trap.

I totally agree with you about the space liner set and the subsurface shuttle. I love how the shuttle is basically something they can lean back against plus the regular passing light to suggest movement. There's another episode where they do something similar to suggest a lift, except the light goes from top to bottom instead of horizontally.

Looking at the space liner pic, it looks like those two 'offices' at top left and right may be an illustration (glass shot?) rather than part of the set.
