I imagine a technology that has advanced far enough for space travel would have some sort of 'buffering' effect in case of impacts. Not that it helped much in Marryat's case.

You mean some artificial gravitational field to compensate for the impact acceleration - very powerful indeed, finely tuned by a computer every nanosecond, both in direction and strength. It could be used as a devastating weapon - even Lord Taarn still had not achieved such a powerful gravitational field. - not plausible theory. And engine for smooth landing sounds more practical.

It could work assuming the capsule is big enough to fall slowly like a balloon, but Ill prefer a paraschute.
