20m: On a barren planet Vila and Dayna spot an old camera.

VILLA: That's one of the most ancient closed circuit television cameras I've ever seen.

[The camera is exactly the same as a prop that would be used as Federation's most advanced camera if the script required]

Good mornign/evening, ladies!

No, I'm not taking part in the rewatch; I was just passing by when I stumbled on the following comment:

I've finally got all the makings for a 'Shadow' necklace.

Uhhh... is it made of teeth?

Have fun with the rewatch!

Haha! Funny you should mention that Hugbot. I've considered that and even sussed out sources of teeth taken from dentists offices. I was thinking something like this:

How are you?

Nothing a few missionaries can't fix.

Those teeth can't all be from Vila's mouth, surely?

14m: SPACE RATS

OMG THIS IS THE SPACE RATS EPISODE. This is a big episode for me. I think aesthetically I rate it as one of the most important episodes. When I think of mid 1980s science-fiction I do think punk and urban decay is a big influence (Mad Max, Robocop, a lot of books I read).

Personally, I think the space rats look AMAZING here but I know I'm probably in a minority. But to get this aesthetic in 1981? It's so forward looking. Chef's kiss emoji

I rather like the hair and make-up - the hair also has the virtue of making it impossible for them to wear a space helmet, thus boosting their macho, live fast and die credentials.

They're actually very dangerous. The number of farmers everywhere who end up squashed under them when they roll over. Not nice.

Possibly part of the appeal to the Space Rats.

Tycecon 1 was brilliant. Someone managed to lock herself out of the venue during her live broadcast. Excellent.

I was going to say that you don't see female Space Rats, but there were a couple in that first scene. They look very like the men - a pity, I had hoped for something a bit more adventurous.

Indeed. The danger factor. Saw an 'I Shouldn't be Alive' ep where some beaver hunter in the US ended up stuck under his for days, with all the big bas beasties around. The Medical Emergency program here has shown a few farmers under them as well.

28m Avon and the non-Avons are strolling around a quarry for some reason.

Avon does a dramatic leap and forward roll. Tarrant leans into Soolin's ear and whispers "don't worry, this is the last series"

Oh ooops sorry, a few years ago Obsidian, Joe Dredd and I did our own mini Blake’s 7 convention (just the three of us). We watched our way through series one and Obsidian and Joe Dredd got extremely creative with Blake seven memorabilia, T-shirts, mugs teleport brace, etc. We also had the honour of Stephen Greif (and Horizon members) zooming in. We thought we’d like to do it again.

Yes, we get similar stories here - usually farmers, or celebs with country estates who buy them for fun.

Don't want to get squashed? Don't try to make the qb drive up (or down) near-vertical slopes, while it's also carrying several bags of sheep feed a couple of dogs and a sick sheep

31m: The space rat leader threatens the scientists working on the star drive to boost power on pain on death. The scientist protests meekly.

Is there anything better than a Federation scientist who kind of knows the Federation is evil but also just really wants to get through their day?

Would probably edit that out on a rebroadcast lol

It was slur for everyone involved in the Vietnam War. I knew an American who used it for anyone with mildly dusky skin colouration.

I think it would have sounded quaint in the UK, even in 1981 - something that is clearly meant to be a dreadful swear word, but isn't going to offend - like 'smeg' in Red Dwarf. Interesting that it would actually be offensive in Australia.

It was what the Americans called the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. Of course, Australian soldiers picked it up, but Australia also took in a lot of Vietnamese refugees so it wasn't used so much. As I said above, I knew an American archaeologist who felt free to use it for foreigners (the Syrians we worked with).

Vila says that the Space Rats are completely apolitical, but Atlay seems to be bent on taking out Federation ships, in a way that does seem to suggest a political agenda.

We never learn what Atlan's real motives are. After all, he says he's not a Space Rat. Much could be made of that in fanfiction but I don't think I've ever read anything that touches on it.
