So I keep telling myself! But I worry anyway.

If it's any help, there's not a lot you can do now....
(I'm sure you've battered it into them).

No. But I've just learnt that one of the weaker students was in hospital over Easter, and the idiot has not taken the opportunity (which was offered him) to delay the exam. I have one more bit of marking for the other weak student, who annoyingly handed in some work at 9pm yesterday, then I'm done.

I suppose Blake's jolly hockey sticks go well with the imperialist notions of the tale.

And Avon is being very Avon-y. If Blake had decided to ignore that freighter, I am sure that Avon would have been loud in his 'we really should investigate'.

Yes, and in the past tense, putting the blame on Blake.

How much of that speech did Avon hear?

Very H. Rider Haggard?

Ancient sexist notions again - Can't send Cally down, she's a girl. Listen Gan, she's also a terrorist fighter, a telepath and a communications expert. Plus she has more common sesne than the rest of you put together.

Commonsense, yes, but she's a weedy terrorist fighter.

This is a good story, by the way. I like the world-building, the Federation carefully educating a native ruler.

Cally may not be the best of the fighters, but she's the only survivor of her group. Presumably because of the common sense.

Yes, the winning over and inculcation of the local elites. It's happened so many times in history right up until our own time.

Hello all! Thank you for your well wishes. All good here thanks. Sorry, I somehow managed to forget about this again after oversleeping. Have joined late and I am just watching Blake and Jenna on the interrogation tables/boards. Hope all is well with everyone?

They're paintings? (the bits that aren't Gloucestershire). Probably re-used from DW, but yes, they're effective.

The way I've seen it is through the educating the elites to believe European ideas of cultural heritage. As a result, people end up being divorced from places and things they lived with every day and which are now reserved largely for the edification (sort of) of tourists.

Horizon seems to have had quite a fierce caste system, pre-Federation.

That would work with Ro, and his ambivalence about his people - one minute they are 'primitives', the next he is one of them.

But I am going to say, yet again, that there must be more efficient ways of mining monopasium than slave labour.

Exactly. You'd be amazed at how even primary teachers regard themselves as massively superior to the "peasants" in the countryside.

They had to put Jenna and Blake towards as they only have two interrogation tables!

Cally's telepathic powers seem rather different, and rather stronger, in this episode. Or did she get the information from ORAC?

But using slaves is cheap, plentiful and a useful deterrant for the rest. Mining is not the only profit to consider. (Quoting from the Federation's World Building Manual).
