Rewatch Downunder Saturday 22nd April B4 Horizon

This is a good story, by the way. I like the world-building, the Federation carefully educating a native ruler.

The costumes in this ep are stunning and I love the mineral backdrop paintings.
Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Cally may not be the best of the fighters, but she's the only survivor of her group. Presumably because of the common sense.

Where is the location filming done?

Yes, the winning over and inculcation of the local elites. It's happened so many times in history right up until our own time.

I'm firmly in support of of the fighting-and-running-away theory. Maybe she did too.

Hello all! Thank you for your well wishes. All good here thanks. Sorry, I somehow managed to forget about this again after oversleeping. Have joined late and I am just watching Blake and Jenna on the interrogation tables/boards. Hope all is well with everyone?

They're paintings? (the bits that aren't Gloucestershire). Probably re-used from DW, but yes, they're effective.

The way I've seen it is through the educating the elites to believe European ideas of cultural heritage. As a result, people end up being divorced from places and things they lived with every day and which are now reserved largely for the edification (sort of) of tourists.

Horizon seems to have had quite a fierce caste system, pre-Federation.

That would work with Ro, and his ambivalence about his people - one minute they are 'primitives', the next he is one of them.

Yes, it's a wonderful. Nice bit of anthropological observation. Not based on anywhere of course...

But I am going to say, yet again, that there must be more efficient ways of mining monopasium than slave labour.

Exactly. You'd be amazed at how even primary teachers regard themselves as massively superior to the "peasants" in the countryside.

They had to put Jenna and Blake towards as they only have two interrogation tables!

AnneArthur
Cally's telepathic powers seem rather different, and rather stronger, in this episode. Or did she get the information from ORAC?

I thought there was another standing over to the side. They are fairly uncomfortable-looking frames.

But using slaves is cheap, plentiful and a useful deterrant for the rest. Mining is not the only profit to consider. (Quoting from the Federation's World Building Manual).

Costumes must have hated this episode - getting Blake and Jenna all dirty. Bet we don't see those paricular costumes again for a while, if ever.

As an archaeologist I'm not averse to a bit of dirt, but those outfits really are filthy. The sort of thing that make's one's mother scowl on laundry day.

I did a noble thing yesterday - my son's brother-in-law asked to borrow my B7 season 3 DVD's, and I let him. But it doesn't feel good. Hope they survive - and come back!

Agreed the outfit is awesome. I don’t think I could deal with the bare feet though.

I love the material that these Burgundy costumes are made of!
