I'm working on a theory that the number of studs (or other shiny metal bits) worn is directly related to the amount of 'leadership' the character has.

Perhaps they equate "being attractive" with magnets.

49m: The Liberator escapes and the black hole or a ship or something explodes.

Cally: That must be the Thaarn, I should've killed him
Vila: What did he look like?
Cally: I never saw him.

Why does Cally say that? What an interesting little mysterious moment. I guess they shared minds and it's such an intimate thing even if they're evil that she didn't want to share it with Vila. Or the Thaarn is sort of Auron so she had some allegiance. It's interesting!

Yeah - almost just in time for the credits. LOL

Looking at the costumes, maybe I should watch a Dickens adaption instead.

I find that sort of costuming quite lazy, which is why I like June Hudson's designs. I like Nicky Rocker's, but June just went whacko, often with the entire budget.
Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

OK, roll on next week... another episode with its plot holes strung together with stupid nonsense...but Servalan's back. Makes it all worthwhile.
Incidentally, Dayna vs Servalan - who'd win?

51m: Safely on the Liberator, Orac laments there's another being of similar intelligence.

Tarrant: I don't know. He did have one redeeming feature. [He non-nonchalantly pulls the plug on Orac] He didn't like computers.

It's funny but also Orac was happy to get them killed and they seem pretty sanguine about it lol

This 'let's raid the Costume department' approach makes sense in 'Gambit', but not here. I wonder whether the script was written that way, or they decided to save some budget, or they just ran out of time.

I think Orac knew they'd survive, and just didn't bother telling them because he/it was busy studying the black hole.

Well that was "Dawn of the Gods". I think it is very entertaining on the first watch but on a second watch with less mystery it struggles a bit.

I thought the production values were pretty good on this one. The void set, the grinding machine, even some space suits... and of course the shag carpet

There's a theory Orac engineered the events of the last episode.

She was loads more imaginative. At last, in Joe Nazzro's book, we learn what she made the insect carapaces from in Killer.

Me too. A canny bloke. I was interested that she actually lined the PVC with a stiff lining. I could have sworn it came off the roll like that. I remember that stuff. I've got a puppet I made that had it as a jerkin.

Tarrant leaps instantly to a traction beam? And when people point out there's no such thing he accuses Cally's people of messing with his mind.

It also contradicts 'Games'

Yawn of the Gods - Tarrant thinks a traction beam can affect Liberator

Games - Tarrant scoffs at the idea a traction beam could affect Scorpio.

Though I do like the B7-ese of 'traction beam' rather than the more usual 'tractor beam'.

Yes. We see it docked in Ultraworld and Redemption.

I always think of it as designed to never land, but just stay in space, however Zen gives a warning in 'Moloch' that their approach to Sardos is 'inconsistent with safe planetfall' which suggests it could land (much to my annoyance).

Then there are the Big Finish stories which have it going underwater and doing all sorts of stupid things. Of course, being a spaceship it is air tight, but it mans all the bits and bobs on the outside that are normally assumed to be vents and ramscoops etc can't be -- unless they can seal shut.

I find the Liberator of the BF stories to be a much weaker ship than the one in the show.

I've heard it said that spaceships are easier to make in some ways than submarines because spaceships only need to deal with 1 atmosphere difference in pressure (from air to space) whereas a sub has to handle 100s of atmospheres of pressure (I don't know the terminology).

I could believe the Liberator going underwater more than it landing. It feels like a ship that always wants/needs to be moving

It's a bit of a Wizard of Oz "Please ignore the man behind the curtain" moment.

That makes perfect sense. So even if Liberator could go underwater, there may be a limit to how deep.

16m: The gang wonder where they are.

Avon: An unlikely possibility is that we have fallen through the black hole into the so-called negative universe of antimatter, where time and energy no longer exist.

That harks back to Cygnus Alpha:

AVON Negative hyperspace.
BLAKE You mean we crossed the anti-matter interface?

And, given 'Star One' actually has anti-matter mines, then perhaps this is something known rather than theorised? Or at least, considered scientifically probable.

It must be humbling to get hired for a role like this and then they don't even apply any make up and when you ask for a costume they say "your day wear clothes are fine as is ... and ACTION"

Interestingly, Servalan has an offsider named Dastor in 'Harvest of Kairos'.

Even brainwashed Dayna does a massive FU and misleads about Orac's existence. LOVE IT

I really like how Tarrant builds up a false picture of Orac simply by telling the truth - no hair, not tall. A short bald dwarf wouldn't be hard to find.

I always felt bad when seeing a movie with someone who was chosen for a role because they were really ugly, or extremely fat, or whatever. "Congratulations, Ethel, you got the part! You were fatter than anyone! The producers couldn't believe it. Get some sleep tonight because you're needed on set at 7am. The studio will send a forklift to pick you up."

This "underworld" is almost good but doesn't quite hang together. Sort of sinister slave / mining / scrapping world but not quite drawn cleanly.

It reminds me of the NuWho episode written by Neil Gaiman, the one with the characters that were luring TARDISes to their doom.

No worries, I find we all drop off too quickly anyway! I could discuss this episode for hours haha

Why did Cally tell Vila she never saw the Thaarn? Chappell delivers the line so perfectly.

Have a good week!
