This is where Soolin and Avon start to become playmates, so to speak. They really get on the same wavelength.
Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

State of play at 25m - Belkov has scammed the Federation - Belkov is double crossing Servalan by plotting an escape via Avon - Avon has abandoned Vila on the planet - Belkov has also offered Avon's head as a deal with Servalan - Servalan is undercover working to take over the Federation - Tarrant and Dayna are robbing Belkov - Vila is ingratiating himself with the Federation troopers |

Morning/evening everyone! Late as usual, I'm afraid - too long cowering under the duvet. If I'd got up at about 7 it would have been beautiful, I think - lots of gently falling snow - but the weather is warming up and the snow has turned to rain. A perfect day for staying in and watching Blake's 7. Hi AnneA. Good week? I saw lovely videos of snow falling in Lyme Regis the other day. Up where you are it definitely sounds like a day to stay in bed and watch B7. Mixed. Two days' supply teaching, so some money coming in, finally. But I learned that a research project I was part of has not been funded, which is a big blow. You? Money? What's that? I sell stuff but not enough to cover my rent anywhere. ![]() Here, my university wants the staff to withgo several years worth of pay rises in order to solve its financial problems. Staff not impressed. I hope they all disappear up their own fundaments. Don't care anymore. The uni made its bed, it can lie in it. Yes. Unis here are in financial trouble, too. Years of being encouraged to expand, and to take lots of foreign students (mostly Chinese), only to find that foreign students are now classified as undesirable immigrants and their numbers must be reduced. That was the previous government, of course, but reversing that is not a priority for the new one. |

Now that Winspit Quarry is heritage listed it's probably not possible to let off explosions any more.

14m: Garren brokers a zoom call with Belkov. It's thieves dealing with thieves. This is a strong episode and I think it is partly because every faction in this story is feeling the pressure. It's sort of which rat can escape the sinking ship. The guests are top actors and do their jobs well. It's a nicely twisty tale. This, in my mind, is where series 4 really picks up. As you say, a nicely twisty tale, and well executed by everybody. Definitely A if not A+. Yes, although I do think the previous episode Assassin has a lot of good stuff going on... but it all clicks here Agreed. Piri in Assassin is objectionable and the spider thingy risible, but I like the plot a lot and there are lots of good things in it. A fabulous turn by Richard Hurndall as Nebrox. Could definitely see him as part of the B7 gang. |

32m: Avon and Orac plot how to get at Belkov through his previous computer. Avon: "Belkov does not trust anyone except that machine. It is his bodyguard, his companion, his playmate... " Just say it, Avon, "and his SECRET LOVER" |

Belkov is delightfully slippery. 35m: Belkov gives the gang a tour to the chamber under the launchpad, then traps them inside. He is currently blowing up the mines to kill the Federation troopers, hide his theft, and to let Tarrant and co take the blame. And yet I still like him. Slippery indeed! |

Now that Winspit Quarry is heritage listed it's probably not possible to let off explosions any more. Why would an old quarry be heritage listed? All the episodes of Doctor Who, Space:1999, Blake's 7 and The Tripods have made a UK quarry a pristine cultural heritage location. "This rock is where Sarah-Jane Smith twisted her ankle", "This gully is where Martin Landau fought a fake looking octopus" |

The filming of assorted BBC TV shows in its environs probably contributed to the listing. It's a very old quarry and I think, also, the listing is for natural environment purposes: an important bat colony. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

That's very interesting about the quarry. So odd to think that what as a child I thought of as mundane TV series (but highy enjoyable ones, of course) are now cultural icons! |

38m: Vila "seduces" Gambit the computer to help him. A pretty fun development really. It's like Vila has learned to talk to computers from Avon but still has his bar legs in a way nerds like Belkov and Avon never have. |

Probably another reason why he feels so let down later on, in Orbit. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

42m: The gang have to play a series of deadly games to progress. Luckily each game appears to play exactly to the skills of each of the gang (quick draw, piloting, lock picking). I think this episode is lucky that home video games (still relatively new in 1981) have become part of our culture. It kind of gives the episode a good flavour to the modern watcher |

Early video games weren't that spicy, even by the mid-80s, but they became so very rapidly thereafter. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

In classic B7 style, everyone loses. Reminds me of the episode where the planet blows itself up and Avon says something like "Servalan won" and Cally says "No the people won (by living up to their ideals" and Vila responds "If that's winning, I'll take losing every time" |
