Rewatch Downunder, Saturday 12th Ogtober, D2 Power

For me 'Power' is a bit boring because it repeats so much that we've seen before: seems it's only there to get us from dead sea monsters back to 'civilisation'. It does do that, but for me it's a waste of an episode, because their escape from Xenon could have been done in a few choice lines, really, without having to invent an implausible war of the sexes.

I also like the idea that Dorian was getting help with the teleport. It fits in with the idea that he used the talents of others to develop what he had (e.g. Slave being described as 'sophisticated' and mention of a visit to Ensor; the clipguns being remarkable and his girlfriend happens to be a top gunslinger). It also explains why he'd failed for so long.

Because that's how societies work effectively; each doing their part. This episode I see as full of moral tales.

I actually see it as BSteed saying, rather clumsily, that men and women can't manage to run a society without each other.

That's a good observation, Obsidian. I have wondered if Avon's "charming way with women" line was written by ben Steed or Chris Boucher, but I imagine Avon's conclusion about running out of people was Steed's. He may well have been making a plea for more harmoney between men and women.

I think that's EXACTLY what he was doing. I remember the gender politics of time quite viscerally. They weren't pretty from where I was sitting.

Is Dorian one of the most consequential characters in the B7 universe from during its run? The captain of The London, the man who invented Orac, Dorian...

Kate says the Seska had been working on the teleport for generations. I wonder if that was all with Dorian, and whether there'd always been a plan by the top Seskas to produce a tele-ergotron, or if that only happened when Pella got to power.

Possibly. It's not a great episode but I don't see it as bad. It does, however, provide a context for many of the things that Dorian could not have achieved on his own, not even with his original partner.

I believe so. And he's a popular character.

Sorry, dodgyville, I don't get what you mean. Did you mean to say Ensor at the start?

We may never know! Dorian was around for quite a while, so maybe he used them to forward his own research. Don't see him working with anyone else unless he was keeping the results for himself, really.
Anyway, I'd better go and do useful things. Thanks for the rewatch, everyone.

I just mean that Dorian has a massive impact on the direction Avon and the gang take that I never really noticed. Maybe even a bigger impact than Ensor or the Captain of the London.

Good question. Pella certainly comes across as a driving force, but I guess someone had to be given that the Seska were being reduced in number every day. She tries methods for improving or advancing her, if not their, lot. A lot of it reminds me of current (and a lot of past) politics.

Absolutely! And Pella and the Seska are part of that impact, but Dorian is essential to the crew's redirection, as it were.

Yes, quite possibly. But possibly not as much as Blake.
