41m: Vila has kept his eye on the prize (getting off the planet before the bomb goes off) and the survivors agree to work together to unlock the hangar door.

One thing in this episode's favour is that everyone (except maybe Tarrant) have something meaty to do.

Vila unlocking the door, Orac analysing the lock, Dayna fighting the men, Avon sort of Avon-ing around...

It's also a very useful outer garment and I just LOVE a man in a well-cut 3-piece suit.

Interesting that Nina assumes that with Gunn-Sar dead, she will be in charge.

I would call the outer garment a waistcoat. Vest to me sounds American.

47m: Avon: It's a problem, isn't it? You can have war between races, war between cultures, war between planets. But once you have war between the sexes, you eventually run out of people.

I have always thought of it as very 80s - grey with little colour highlights. I have a whole selection of grey luggage from the 80s.

I'd differentiate them on the basis a waistcoat is worn over clothing whereas vests and spencers are worn underneath.

Plus, you lot refer to underwear as pants, which is just plain wrong. Every civilised person knows they're called your good old reg grundies.

That's why Avon has Orac pretend all the Zerok money is worthless. So the others won't know when he pays Soolin with it.

Hmm, I think Big Finish needs to make more of the many, many fanfics written by women before all the blokes who were kids when the show was on took over. So many of them are so much better.

I had a good chuckle when I saw that. Really, it's the Yugoslav wars in disguise with Blake running around trying to pacify everyone, so the Bogomils are where they started: in the Balkans. It's very clever. I don't know if it's online or not. It's in Gambit 14.

Looking for positives, I imagine Orac is a hard character to write for and there was a hint, just a hint, of an effective method.

There's a moment when Tarrant asks Orac to solve a problem and Orac says "The logical alternatives are within the bounds of human reasoning. I suggest you consider them and leave me in peace to reflect on those matters which are not."

I think that is a logical way to limit Orac while still preserving its status as the most amazing computer of all time. So "Power" got one thing right.

I like the puzzle about the non-working teleport and how it all comes together. The idea of a war between the sexes is completely stupid, however. How would that ever work and who would agree to that? There are some redeeming features - Avon's "You have a charming way with women" is clearly our hero saying this behaviour is NOT ON AT ALL. At the same time, there are other things implied - women aren't 100% 'real' until they're married - that are wrong on a much larger scale, and so while I dismiss it as total rubbish I can see how others may be offended or uncomfortable with it.

As someone I knew said back then: the 80s were porridge-coloured. I see the grey as reflecting the situation for our heroes, not as reflecting the current fashion trends.

Avon says at the end that Orac is not being difficult, but functioning to request. Avon hasn't told the others what he is doing (trying to fix the teleport, need a crystal, going to get one from the big gang of savages or at least their territory) or what he suspects (the Seska are trying to steal the spaceship and have deliberately misdirected Dorian's efforts at a teleport into another direction). He's playing his cards close to his chest and instructs Orac to give the most roundabout answers as part of delaying them (and keeping them out of danger?).

I actually see it as BSteed saying, rather clumsily, that men and women can't manage to run a society without each other.

I also like the idea that Dorian was getting help with the teleport. It fits in with the idea that he used the talents of others to develop what he had (e.g. Slave being described as 'sophisticated' and mention of a visit to Ensor; the clipguns being remarkable and his girlfriend happens to be a top gunslinger). It also explains why he'd failed for so long.

20th century scifi continually tried to do the "planet of the women where men are hunted" concept and I don't think it ever worked and was often one of the worst episodes of whatever show tried it!

Agreed, and also about the last part. He does a lot of that all in all. He ought to tell the others but knows that the squabbling would be a pain, so he doesn't. Tough choice.

That's a good observation, Obsidian. I have wondered if Avon's "charming way with women" line was written by Ben Steed or Chris Boucher, but I imagine Avon's conclusion about running out of people was Steed's. He may well have been making a plea for more harmoney between men and women.
