I wonder if the frosted 'milk bottle' style carafe was part of the set.

This is the sort of detail fans are concerned about! The (hopefully forthcoming) Production Diaries ought to have all the answers, but I bet they don't.

Chris Boucher was fine with strong women. He was new generation at that time AND he wrote Soolin, who is tough. Dayna is a girl still. I don't think it's the dark that sets off Dayna; it's the everything coming to a head.

The fans don't. But they tend to think the stuff in B7 was all cheap because the production was. Like the furniture, however, the glassware wasn't; it was almost all expensive designer stuff.

Well, she flounces around on Terminal telling Avon to get out of her way, then is attacked by a worm thingy, Cally dies and then she and Vila fall down a cliff to be rescued by Dorian. Then she boldly goes (sic) down the stairs but gets a shock once at the bottom. I think anyone is entitled to a bit of a sob.

Got some other things to do first but am on the look-out again. Give me a couple of weeks to get the business back on-track and I'll see what I can do about writing an article about my search. There are only a few things I've yet to identify. Dorian's serving ware has been the most difficult to track down.

I like Series D as much as the others (Blake's 7 is almost eerily consistent) but this episode is so random! A loose adaption of The Picture of Dorian Gray was just not on my radar after Terminal.

Agreed. It fits the story arc perfectly. I don't mind the demented Dorian as a way to go at all. It's a way-out way to give our heroes a new base and a new ship. Got to like it for that, and Geoffrey Burridge is captivating.

I think I can see how Chris Boucher got to this point, when trying to reinvigorate the show for a new, unexpected series. He's got to get the heroes a working ship, and weapons, but also to replicate some of the things they'd lost (teleport, talking computer, fastest ship in the galaxy) as these are hallmarks of B7. [Or the first two at least. Speed comes from necessity. If they want to make the heroes position more precarious, they've got to at least be able to run away without being overtaken and caught.]

Getting all those things from a variety of places would perhaps stretch credibility, and take up too much of the season. Much better to come up with one person who has everything. (Well, the star drive comes from elsehwere, but the teleport is mostly in place.) And then, having posited such a character, how could he do all this unless he lived a long, long time? And why does he come looking for the crew? The answer ties both together, and then you suddenly realise you've come up with the "The Picture of Dorian Gray", so might as well name the character Dorian.

I don't know if that's how it really happened, but I can see that it could have.

My own personal theory about it, for which I have absolutely no evidence, is that Boucher as script editor was seeking inspiration and looked to Philip Hinchcliffe's successful Doctor Who run (for which he contributed Robots of Death a few years previously) and saw a common formula was sci-fi adaptions of literary horror like Frankenstein and decided to do it with Dorian Gray.
