Well, that was a top episode.

I wonder if we'll be in a position to watch the remastered Blu-ray version of it this time next year.

What's so good about Blu-ray anyway? It's the extras they're including that matter!

Exactly! I don't need new whizz-bang model shots etc. Just as I don't need Shakespeare to be acted in Nazi clothing. It's the acting and the words that matter.

I am a sucker for updated SFX and it looks like they filmed new shots with actual models (augmented by CGI by oh well). I really am impressed

Not yet... we know there will be an Australian release, because Madman Entertainment accidentally listed it back in June (I think). That means we may see it at Amazon AU, JB Hifi, & Sanity. I'm holding out to see how much it will be.

Otherwise, I may go with Rarewaves. They're listing it for around $85 but every month or two they have a weekend where they give out a 10% or 15% discount code. That should cover most of the postage, at least. Also too, it's about equivalent to what Amazon UK are charging (on a "just double it" rule of thumb for converting from GBP).

Probably #2 for me after Sand. But there's so many Servalan episodes to choose from it's hard to decide.

Rarewaves has been my go-to for a lot of things. And yes, the way the dollar is at present, we can just double the figures for the cost in AUD from GBP.

Should add, I don't like giving my $$$ to ratbag corporations.

I don't think HMV are an option for us. I know last year when Network Distributing went into liquidation, and I was trying to chase down a few wish-list titles, HMV had stock and I couldn't order from them.

I didn't realise they had made it as far as Australia! My brother uses the website a lot, and has some of the meerkat characters as free gifts. Interesting that they think that the Australian public will not stomach the wombat, though!

The one comment I've read from someone who has seen them was:

I had a sneak peek at the first episode and it looks very good, although sadly aside from the titles (which look magnificent properly remastered in HD) there's no original film for it. However, I then saw some of 'Seek - Locate - Destroy' for which the location film does exist and that looked fantastic. From memory there's film for about half the season one episodes but it's much more sparse after that.

The film sequences were put back in where applicable for the DVD release, but errors did creep in as a result of the pressures of time and budget back then. I understand that the new drop-ins have been carefully checked against the TX versions to ensure that those errors are not repeated.

Possibly a review copy? I think the gist of the criticism was that they had remastered the special effects scenes but not the others, so that it was rather uneven. I'm afraid that my response was surprise, as I didn't know about the Blu-rays. And I wasn't much interested - I watch Blake's 7 for the dialogue, the ambiguity, the character conflicts and the lack of cheery optimism, not for the effects.

I go through phases of watching it and thinking that it's all a bit OTT, and then watching it again and thinking that it's really rather good. It would make my top ten, definitely, but not always my top five.

First Dog is a cartoonist. He used to be in Canberra and does excellent cartoons for the Guardian. Australian wildlife appear in many roles. So do two-headed aliens and a cast of dogs. Completely mad but brilliantly cutting.

As for the wombats, I haven't seen that ad here at all yet. Maybe soon.

I am surprised that you hate Sarcophagus and love Sand, Ms Virn. I much prefer Sand myself (definitely in my top five) but I can Sarcophagus doing much the same thing - taking an uneplored relationship and taking it somewhere interesting.

Anyway, thanks for the rewatch, everyone. See you next week I hope!

If they can remaster the episodes so they look better, that will be a good thing. The DVDs had a number of faults, including a fairly washed-out picture and some audio drop outs.

Film carries more 'information' that video. Blu-ray has more room and can hold the detail. Have you ever see the remastered episodes of The Professionals? Example - have a look at the scene at about 16 seconds in.

It's a double-edged sword, though. A murky picture can hide all sorts of sins. I remember watching "Power" on DVD for the first time after VHS. The door to the launch silo suddenly looked like a bit of plywood.

There is that thing about 'better' Joe, of course, and I'm hoping that that the clarity will help me to identify some of the glasswear a little better.Smile But also, the sins. I've seen the new version of The Professionals and I suppose it's the lack of graininess that stands out. It's not everything to me though. I WILL be getting the Blu-rays if I can afford them.
