Rewatch Downunder Saturday 15th June, B11 Gambit
M1795537OCVirn
Start times: Downunder 7.30pm, UK 10.30am.

B11 Gambit
In which we see the irridescent Krantor try (and fail) to outshine the amazing Servalan, the Woman in Red. Well written, great character acting from most, including Orac, but some massive errors, like Jarriere, and the usual interesting ideas that sink into the depths and are never used again. In fact, a typical episode of B7.

Alas I will be at the footy tonight. The weather forecast is "very cold with a chance of serrated ice shards" so pray for me

I think we can all feel sorry for someone who prioritises footy over B7, but I hope you enjoy your ice shards, dodgyville. We'll miss you.

So who else can we expect here today? Obsidian is still out of communicator range, I take it, and my intelligence unit has not located Tyce, so perhaps Joe? And AnneA? I can wait. You rebels will show yourselves in the end.

Playing hard to get, eh? I don't mind watching Gambit alone, but I won't be commenting....started.

Hi Ms Virn. I've just arrived, and just started.

AnneArthur
I think my main problem with this episode is how Travis managed to get from where he was last week to where he is this week. Presumably we have to assume that a lot of time has passed. Several weeks for Travis to get into character as Shivan, and several more weeks for him to work as Doccholi's bodyguard.

AnneArthur
Presumably the androgynous female MC is a response to the androgynous male MC in Cabaret.

AnneArthur
Intriguing that Servalan has a male mask.

M1795537OCVirn
Hello Anne, I'm so glad you are here. I don't like talking to myself. As to the timeline, I agree: I don't think the writers were thinking about continuity when they wrote their individual episodes. It makes for considerable gaps in the flow of things.
The thing that gets me about Gambit is the stupid shape-shifting Orac. Why introduce the possibility if you're never going to mention it again?

An interesting idea!

So now we discover that Travis was operated on by two medics - Docholli and Marryat - to whom he is apparently forever gratful.

I know. It would have been useful in so many episodes.

That arm takes a lot of looking after.

Perhaps one was orthopedics and the other neurology?

Hello, sorry I'm late. I've got a note from my Mum...

It's how Avon hides Orac on GP.

I gather from the Facebook pages that Seek Locate Celebrate went well - lots of good pictures.

Ah. Well, never having had the courage to watch Blake again, I hadn't picked up on that. A bit of an afterthought, though.

It isn't mentioned, I think - but it would be one way to do it.

How many minutes in are you both?

Not a favourite episode. Travis is so easily beaten up, and no one pronounces Cevedic the same way as anyone else.

The Docholli = Doc Holliday thing has always made we wonder if there's any significance to the ship being called the 'Baree'. All I can think of is a cattle brand.

Sorry Mc Virn, it's just speculation on my part - slightly tongue in cheek.

I always assumed it was Bari, as in the city in Italy (a sister ship of the London, perhaps?)

I don't do FB so I haven't seen the pics. My lasting memory is of seeing Brian Croucher wandering around outside without his minders. Must have managed to escape them. Rebel incompetence!

But it's a good idea - it's a pity it wasn't made explicit.

At the moment the Klute has just won the speed chess and is laughing maniacally.

Had a lovely time talking to some special people, notably Obsidian, Tyce, AnnieW, Purple Cleric and Diane herself.

Thanks AA.

Thanks also for the thought about Bari.

I wonder what Jacs felt about having to explain the whole plot via Jarriere.

Good. I'm supposed to be meeting Obsidian at Bamburgh next Saturday. I'm hoping she will get in touch soon.

I was told Sally Knyvette mentioned she'd recorded commentaries for the S1 Blu-ray.

It's a major weakness of the episode.

The character has to be played as a dimwit, but he doesn't seem the type of person Servalan would bring along as back up.

AnneArthur
That cat looks drugged.

Joe Dredd
It's very much a costume-box episode - gangsters, nuns, wild west saloon owner...

AnneArthur
Is it reasonable that Chenie hasn't heard of Servalan? Surely everyone would know who she is?
