B 10 Voice From The Past
In which Blake & co make a slight detour in their search for Star One to visit an Imax theatre displaying what has to be the largest image of Servalan ever seen. A mysterious character swathed in bandages (leprosy??) is about to join a meeting of rebel groups who plan to unite against the Federation. However, it is all a cunning plan by the said Federation, led by the incomparable Servalan and her henchman Travis 2.
Since it's a trap, Blake insists of falling into it, exposing his crew to untold dangers and stress. Will they survive? Now read on.
"You're not sulking, I hope?"

Watching a cinema screen on a TV screen is like watching fireworks on the TV. You lose all sense of the spectacle of it.

Nevertheless, Servalan may be seen on the biggest Imax screen ever, but I shall watch the show as nature intended, on the small screen: Heroes of the Small Screen.

Another episode directed by George Spenton Foster, who was no fan of Brian Croucher, and vice versa.

Jacqui Pearce said he couldn't wait to get down the pub when they opened at 10am.

Michael Keating said he was given some long speeches but GSF filmed them all over his shoulder, looking at the others, doing him out of his close-ups.

Let's see what else there is to see...

My computer is doing a random thing where sometimes when I type, it locks up whatever I am typing into - web browser, notepad, etc - and I have to restart.

If I go silent, I'm restarting...

Hello everyone. Am I the only one here?

AnneArthur
Are there any fanfics set on Del 10? It sounds amusing.

Joe Dredd
Hello Anne!

It's you, me, and six lovely lurkers.

Hello folks!

Have you started? Okay, I'm hitting play.

Joe Dredd
oops, I scared off the lurkers.

There is only one, exceptionally brave lurker left.

That would explain a lot.

Joe Dredd
Oops, now even AA is not showing up.

Joe, what have you done?

No, I'm blaming the script for this one.

Hello, Joe!

I suppose it makes a change to have Blake taken over, rather than Cally.

Oh good, you're still here.

Apparently he was very camp and only paid attention to Jackie Pearce.

AnneArthur
No, I'm here, Joe - just watching, typing and fending off a cat!

Joe Dredd
This is one of the episodes I tend to skip over, so on the positive side of things, I haven't seen it for ages.

Not a good episode for him then, as she only appears at the end.

I find it frustrating. It has possibilities - the idea of a figure from Blake's rebel past is a good one - but the execution is poor, and Travis in disguise is ridiculous.

AnneArthur
There is just enough truth in the idea of Avon and Cally working together to make it believable - that is one of the good things of this episode, but why would Vila swallow this asteroid as the only way of stopping them?

Joe Dredd
Yes, agreed. I like the idea of a mind influencer device too.

I never thought of it before, but there's some similarity with the Breakdown scenario, with Blake's mind blocks possibly causing him issues, Blake behaving abnormally and needing to be sedated.

It is odd. Similarly, in Hostage when Travis calls Liberator and suggests joining forces. He's got nothing to offer and a track record in being a psychopath and wanting to kill them, yet Vila seems to be in favour of letting him join the team.

Joe Dredd
Avon's wearing his classic S2 jacket.

AnneArthur
And what are these mutants? Why does Vila immediately think of them, when he hears that life support is still working? So frustrating!

Yes, that's true. I have wondered if Gan's breakdown might have been caused by the Federation, but I'm not sure how possible that would be.

Joe Dredd
I'm a little ways behind you, Anne.

I've just seen Blake convince Vila to release him, which must have been one of the over-the-shoulder conversations MK was unhappy with, then a great shot of Vila in front of Zen. It's good to be reminded that Zen is big.

Joe Dredd
Interesting spacesuit that Blake has, with no air supply.

And the view from the surface of the asteroid is bananas. There's a planet balancing on a tightrope.

Ooh, and "Air Lock" in futuristic 1970s 'Data' font.

Very unusual for me to be ahead of everyone else!

And yes, it's good to be reminded how large Zen is.

Someone is having a joke! I don't know who thought these painted backdrops were a good idea.

Just reached this bit. I agree. When do we ever see mutants?

Blake's just met the delegation,. all in their dressing gowns. Harry 'Aitch' Fielder propping up Shivan.

This is the only episode that mentions mutants, I think.

Joe Dredd
I was thinking earlier about which characters we see reappear in later episodes.

Ven Glynd is here, from The Way Back, but with a different actor.

Rontane and Bercol, of course.

I think the only other one, and the longest gap, is 'real' Blake, from Star One to 'Blake'.

I think that's all.

I have a feeling there may be a couple of other mentions. Servalan uses a phrase that sounds like a quote, "Behold, the mutants shall wither". I have a nagging feeling there's another mention somewhere - but they're certainly not the constant 'shadow of the bogey man' type presence that's suggested by them being the first thing Vila thinks of.

Yes, and if done well, this could have helped this episode.

But I quite like the lack of continuity. If this had been Star Trek, we would have known exactly what happened to the Blake clone, for example - it would have been done to death over several episodes. Blakes 7 leaves lots of room for imagination.

Joe Dredd
Why give Shivan a googly eye? It just makes the character look more ridiculous.

'Behold, the mutants shall wither' is in this episode - Servalan said it a minute or two ago (from where I am). I was thinking it was a different one when I typed that.

Is the ridiculousness part of the director's idea of high camp? It does ruin the episode rather.

On the other hand, Avon is consistently right in this episode - surprising that it doesn't get more love for that alone.

Joe Dredd
Oh, just caught the 'behold the mutants shall wither' line. It makes sense if all the mutant references are contained in this episode. Ditto the crimino-therapists get mentioned as the ones who programmed Blake's memory blocks, and again when Servalan muses on the fate of Governor Le Grand. The writer is trying to build continuity but it's only internal to this episode.

I'm enjoying that part of the episode. He's just deduced about the influencer using low power now they are all near each other.

Gosh, I'm not fond of the guest costumes in this one.

But neither mutants nor crimino-therapists are bad ideas in themselves, and it would be interesting to have them explored further.

Very cheap and nasty.

The Atlay shuttle lands on a pad, yet it is descibed as having docked. I'm probably a pedant, but 'land' and 'dock' seem two clearly different things to me. I suppose the scriptwriter didn't know what the VFX people were going to come up with, but I wish the dialogue could have been updated.

Meanwhile, Thunderbirds has nothing to fear from this landing sequence.
