Why bother cryogenically freezing a body why not just use a person/body you captured a couple of weeks ago?

Perhaps they wanted to wait to attack humans until they reached a part of space where they were a threat? Or perhaps the ship, with its human time bomb, has been in space for a long time? The alien race who did this may even be extinct by now.

31m: The outbreak finally starts... the pacing is strange in this episode. Not necessarily bad, just normally when sci-fi does "the plague episode" it happens at the beginning. I think it would really work well as a kind of massive mid-episode shift if the first 30 minutes had been more focused.

This Colin Farrell didn't have quite the career of his namesake.

Interesting question.

If the Darkling Zone is near Earth, how close is Fosferon? I get the impression it's far away. Also, the spaceship in 700 years old. Perhaps the Epinaarl, or whoever did it, set it all up 700 years ago, but instead of drifting towards Earth it ended up drifting in the wrong direction.

That was always my assumption given how old the vessel is purported to be.

As I type, there are a couple of thousand people running past my house on the Windermere Marathon. It's really hot today - not ideal for running! Good luck to them.

This is what I don't like about this episode. Tynus announces a plague and Vila, who normally has a very well-developed sense of self-preservation, doesn't even query remaining in a potentially infected area. They all just assume that they will be all right. I can see them relying on the Liberator's medical bay, but it would be nice if that were made explicit.

37m: A good bit of detective work by Vila to uncover the message. He's quite street smart as a character and goes quickly to Avon and they both instantly realise what they need to do. Thick as thieves indeed!

Although the ash on the writing pad was a bit "boy's own adventure"... I think Holmes cribbed a lot of this episode the Famous Five or something

Maybe they didn't care who they infected - humans, aliens... minds sick enough to set a thing like this up weren't thnking straight anyway.

42m: More dialogue goodness

VILA: He hopes to get a medal for catching us, but he won't want you picked up, not with what you've got on him. I think you're going to have an accident, Avon.

AVON: We shall see who has the accident.

VILA: A man who sketches insects must have an eye for detail. He's probably worked out an ingenious solution.

This is something we've discussed before and, while it might seem daft to today's kiddies, there is no guarantee that technological developments continued unabated given the cataclysms likely to have occurred before the 2nd calendar was instituted. Very likely they did not and various 'wheels' had to be reinvented or adapted.

Known as GT6 because he had a facility with that many languages. The one with the husband is the rugby player.

46m: Missing Jenna and Cally. Don't want to labour the point as it's a common refrain but this episode is so bloke-y. It's like they have completely given up on the characters. Grr

He is now, yes. But it would be good if Avon were to say 'A few more minutes, then we'll be back on the Liberator, and the medical scanners can remove anything we've picked up from our systems.'

I assumed it was meant to be as in Aussie slang, e.g. "You little ripper!" but at the same time that kind of Aussie phraseology all seems to be disappearing.

They definitely should have made Jenna the one who knew all about the old spaceship.

I think ultimately this episode is a mess. It's got five or six really great ideas in it... the ancient ship, the honest scientists working for the Federation, Avon blackmailing an old friend, a heist of a translator crystal from the facility, the autopsy, the motives of the aliens, the plague itself and how the facility falls to pieces even as they calmly search for a diagnosis and cure... it just needed another draft or two to really bring out the magic.
