Yes - this is only a little while after Blake said to Avon that the next death could be his. Now we'll have a chummy laugh together. (The laughing at Vila doesn't worry me so much - I see it more as gentle ribbing.) Exactly. UNEASE. Uneasy and FORCED delivery. Maybe they just wanted to get this scene over with. (But I agree with you about why they're doing it. It's what blokes do, but we don't often get to see it so publicly). "You're not sulking, I hope?"

I don't like the ending of this one. Blake and Avon bonding in an uneasy way by laughing at Vila - status quo ante. I think it's nerves – nervously being chummy because the alternative of Blake going AWOL permanently/Oh heck, I Blake, am going AWOL permanently is too hideous to contemplate. It's two tom cats doing displacement behaviour after a tussle. Directing things elsewhere (to Vila) is a normal part of that pattern. Which would also explain the ending of Powerplay? Avon deals with the new threat of Tarrant by directing laughter elsewhere - again at Vila? Yes, that's how I see it. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Shove Credit sounds like a fun game, Joe, but I'm still busy with Pseudo atm. Don't tell me we've invented another one! Perhaps the salt & pepper shakers act like obstacles, like in bar billiards. And instead of everyone travelling up the same board in turns, everyone had their own 'long triangle' slice of pie on the table? That would make the high scoring area at the top more challenging, as it's much smaller than the wide area at the edge. I'm worried that this all makes some kind of sense. Er.... not really. Perhaps an illustration would help? "You're not sulking, I hope?"

I just trimmed my answer but, yes, it is what blokes do; they direct problem issues away from themselves while women (poor mugs) tend to take them on-board. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Is this attack actually Blake's greatest success? Ironic if so. Ah, you are here. Good. It seems more like a defeat to me. Chris Boucher loves building in a bit of irony. How a defeat, when they have just trialled a successful detection screen, and have inflicted a heavy blow on Space Command headquarters, killing a large number of officers? If they had just got Travis as well, of course . . . That's the irony, because if Travis hadn't got away to start thinking up ways to get back at his tormentors, where would we be for the next couple of series? I see. So, their greatest technical success, coming off the back of their greatest defeat, ironically sowing the seeds of further defeat? That's my take on it, and I think Chris Boucher's twisted little mind – which I admire greatly – worked exactly like that. The reason why B7 is such good drama. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Er.... not really. Perhaps an illustration would help? This is probably a silly question, but do you know how Shove Ha'penny is played? And that they take turn using the board? |

Well, I'd love to stay here listening to all your little squabbles etc etc, but IT'S SUNNY OUTSIDE! I'm going to go and enjoy it. Sorry it's raining down there (not). Still wondering where Pilot disappears to. Nice to know he's with us in spirit, though. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

It's what blokes do Mea culpa! But if I'm guilty... then so are all of..er, THEM! Psychology 101. It's largely cultural, of course, but that culture has had a hold a VERY long time. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

We have a board somewhere... Excellent! I thought you would know, but just checking in case I had to explain in depth. I was saying that Avon & Jenna could be playing Shove Credit, but on a circular board. A circular board would allow every player to use the playing area in front of them exclusively, rather than taking turns to use the board. I imagine this circular version would be turn-based rather than round-based. Given that the board is circle-shaped, then each participant's playing area will be triangular, like a slice of pie. It narrows as you get to the centre. On a normal Shove Ha'penny board, every row/band is the same width, but this trianguiar shape makes it more tricky, requiring more skill to stay within the bounds while going for the top rows. That leaves the salt shakers to explain. In some games of bar billiards, you set up (mushroom) skittles as obstacles. That could be the function of the shaker-like pieces we see in Avon & Jenna's game. Perhaps too there are rules in the game that allow you to move the skittles on another player's area, in order to make it harder as the game goes on. Or perhaps you can move your own, or even remove them. |
