Rewatch Downunder Saturday 4th May B5 Pressure Point
dodgyville
35mins: Avon talking about the security system wiring. What's interesting about Avon in this episode is that I feel Paul Darrow is a little ahead of the writing in his preferred characterisation of Avon.

Avon is written as the cynical computer expert, reluctant rebel and jealous number 2 but Darrow is playing him like the anti-hero.

It's definitely an interesting transition episode (although you can say that about almost every episode of B7 -- it's always evolving).

It's interesting to watch how both Paul and Jacs make their characters bigger as the series progresses, while some of the others either didn't realise they could, or didn't have that kind of talent.

I really do not like this lizard-feeling-your-tits dress. But it's interesting that Servalan seems to have found time to change (and also that she didn't know who Jenna was).

Gives the whole game away, if he hasn't already. Blake becomes more and more obsessed. On a hiding to nothing really, which is where Avon has been correct all along.

The Federation sets up this super elaborate scheme to trap rebels that involves hiding the MAIN computer holding the entire regime of thousands of planets together and at the heart of it puts a lanky guy with a bad eye patch

But Jenna made it hard by wearing a different dress.

But Avon didn't set himself up as a leader as Blake did, he just ended up with the job. Plus it meant he got to keep the ship and Orac.

They weren't experienced enough at that stage. Paul and Jacs had the ears of the writers, Mr. D. especially, but I still find it fascinating how the characters were written and how they were played. They play genuinely troubled and traumatised types which isn't entirely clear when you read the words on paper. Of course, having Chris Boucher more in the mix helped tremendously because he helped build the characters over the longer term giving them the feel of real human beings who've been through real experiences, rather than just ciphers.

Wouldn't Servalan focus on the dress and wonder who designed it etc..? Identifying the wearer would be secondary.

You know that's really interesting, especially given that Gan just died in this episode. To me one of the foundations of B7 is that each of the seven is a "bad person" that finds themselves in the role of the freedom fighter. It's a really solid foundation but the show often fails to build on it even though it was never afraid to go to dark places.

Gan is a great example. It's kind of suggested throughout the show that he was a violent killer of some kind. Maybe it's possible the show would've explored that more if Jackson had pushed it.

That's the whole thing; it's apples and oranges. They have completely different aims and ambitions. They can't be compared. Avon ends up lumped with something he never wanted and has no idea how to utilise because all he wants is to disappear with riches and a nice research project, not to be leading a fairly pathetic rebellion.

No, one would hope she'd recognise the face first (always the sign of a good manager) then say to herself, "I must remember to ask her to introduce me to her tailor."

It is one of those cases where the internet is an unalloyed good. I know no-one IRL who would be at all interested in Blakes 7, and it is so interesting to get other perspectives on it.

Only because he does have some sort of feeling for Blake, although I don't think he's ever quite sure what it is.

Unfortunately, the BBC didn't really set much store by it. Dr. Who was still the money-spinner. If the Beeb had even acknowledged the popularity of the program even if they couldn't offer major resources, it would have provided the incentive to explore some issues better. Of course, TN heading off to the USA put a dent in things and I'm only glad that at least Chris Boucher got to write more and to help pull some of it together. Their salaries were all pretty awful.

Not of his own volition. Indeed, Series C consists of the crew running around a bit like Space Pirates with no idea what they're on about because, after all, Dayna and Tarrant aren't really part of "The Rebellion", and it is only because they keep crossing Servalan's bows that the fighting for (not leading) that rebellion becomes more pressing. And, as MsVirn says, Avon does have some feeling for Blake and what he was trying to achieve, if ever so naïvely. Then he wants to hand back the whole mess to Blake. Most of the others are just along for the ride and don't want to get caught by the Feds. (I hope that was English).

I've been hanging about all morning because the Royal Mail e-mailed me to say that my 'package' would be delivered sometime between 8 and 12...I had no idea what it was, and was almost getting excited, only to discover it's some papers I need to sign for the bank (as secretary of a local Society). Huh.
