Incidentally, I think I come to Blakes 7 as a fan of Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc. - it's a variant on the disparate group of people on a star-ship scenario. But I get the impression that most people here come from the British sci-fi end - from Dr Who etc. British end. Could never stand Star Blech. Mark you, Lost in Space was fun. Yes, I think that's true for most people. Whereas I have never been much of a fan of Dr Who - the all-knowing alien thing is just tedious to me. Agreed. DW is nowhere near as edgy as it was to begin with. It's too formulaic now. More of a vehicle for the guest actors and the merch than good writing. The people who write/wrote for DW often have a hard time getting to grips with what B7 is all about. Stopped liking it with Peter Davison. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

One annoying thing in this is that they should have got everyone to pronounce Cevedic the same way. It grates for me. Meanwhile, i like Servalan removing he heels. A rare concession to humanity. Yes, it's a nice touch. She's very human. Just driven. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

The original Doctor would never have stood for that for a minute. |

Do we think Avon's enthusiasm for gambling in this episode is out of character or not? |

Do we think Avon's enthusiasm for gambling in this episode is out of character or not? It's easy money. Almost as much fun as a bank fraud. Mostly he enjoys the challenge of using Orac to outwit Freedom City. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

R It's also gone like so many tv series - it tends to rely on the audience remembering a throwaway line from three seasons before. Strictly for fans only. I find the references to him as a 'lonely god' and sim. especially annoying. The original Doctor would never have stood for that for a minute. Really? That is awful. Blake is sidelined by everyone else in this episode. That's partly why it's fun.

Those drinks look perfect, Obsidian! Especially the blue one, and the greens look very authentic too. British end. Could never stand Star Blech. Me too. I get frustrated by how much Big Finish drags Trekisms into B7. I started reading the new Spacefall novelisations and straight away it starts using warp terminology. Ugh. But they don't care... <runs away again> |

Yes, Avon's sentimental about money and has no intention of losing any. He only bets when he knows the odds are very much on his side. And, as AnneA said, that is the difference between Avon and Vila here. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Part of the problem with DW is that it's adults writing for kids, but using mainly adult ideas. I wish they'd ask real kids to come up with ideas about where to take DW in the future. They'd be so much better at imagining something new, not re-hashing mangled bits of history, old scifi themes etc

Not quite. The Sontarans have smooth outfits and the pilot's is the B7 favourite crinkly PVC, but he does look quite similar. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

I don't mind them writing at all, And I am talking about the earlier zines, but it is the case of not respecting the universe. Having to place the action in obviously USA-an (Canadians, Mexicans, Peruvians etc are also Americans) contexts in order to make sense of it. That includes referencing US TV shows instead of B7 itself. The rest of the world understands that we all come from different cultural backgrounds and that that influences the shows. Sadly, (just reading up on more cultural theory today), the USA still thinks US economics and its popular cultural outcomes are the same for all of us. They're not. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Part of the problem with DW is that it's adults writing for kids I tend to think of that as the strength of old Who (and B7, and many other dramas etc), whereas these days both Who and B7 are written by kids, albeit kids who are now grown up. Of course there are exceptions, and a lot of hackwork in the old days, but it reminds me of a comment I read somewhere that said the Beatles produced a great variety of inventive music because their influences were broad - not just Little Richard, but the Goons, Salvador Dali, etc - whereas a more modern band like Oasis would say they were solely influenced by the Beatles. I tend to feel BF is 'influenced' by Star Trek, not necessarily to the point of slavishly copying it but having it so ingrained it keeps percolating up in places it shouldn't be. |

I nearly bought another text today (academic works are soooo expensive) but decided to leave it until I'm less likely to get angry. Oh Joe, you are absolutely right about the broader influences. I think the writers now are often people who were kids when the show was on or not even born, and see the show from a child's viewpoint. They also have no idea about anachronisms. I know that being an adult at the time gives me (and others) a different viewpoint. It's about cultural context. As an archaeologist we were always told not to view ancient cultures from our own viewpoint; you have to take them for what they are, not what you want to mould them to mean for oneself or society, here and now. Of course, all that's changed now, much for the worse. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.
