When I was watching this on Saturday, it occurred to me that the decision to put Servalan in flowing white draperies might owe something to advance publicity for Star Wars, with Princess Leia in flowing white draperies. It got a rather cold reaction, but I'm not convinced that it's ridiculous. What do people think?

I thought of it as ironic costume design, put the darkest character in wholesome white. And it also works as an image of the Federation: pure on the outside, corrupt on the inside.

Fighting talk! I still say the collar is the best bit. What does that symbolise, then?

I don't know, but the sleeves are a little like chain mail, which would make her a knight (not of the Round Table).

1978, quite a bold time to make the main antagonist female.

In 1966, Raumpatrouille had a female battle cruiser commander with the rank of General. The president of the Chroma colony, who was technically an antagonist but with understandable motives, was also a lady.

There is a scene in Project Avalon where whe walks along a line of troopers. For me, this echoes not Leia but Darth Vader boarding the rebel spaceship at the beginning of Star Wars, albeit with inverted colours.

The villain, in the dress of a heroine?

In Servie's eyes, she IS the heroine.

Indeed.

Re those female leaders: Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of the UK from 1979 to 1990. Anyone else see the coincidence?

To coin a phrase, it's 'certainly not decorative'. I find it unpleasing.

Don't worry, just wrap two strips of aluminium foil on the BBC canteen's styrofoam cups, and you have space cups!

I now understand that reference, although I'm disappointed that the Decimas didn't write a song called "Kill The Aurons, End Their Culture".

I think that's what all their shouting meant, even if they hadn't evolved as far as music yet.

Although I think you might have preferred an appearance of the interrogation table in Derek with a certain lady gunslinger being interrogated...
