I love it - Pilot's off to bed (great to hear from you btw) and Anne's just joining us! Did we actually start an hour ago? I find it hard to sort these things out. Sorry - didn't mean to confuse you, Anne. As I understand it, Pilot starts his day early - really early! - so by the time we start, it's his bedtime. But look forward to the week after next, when our clocks will have changed.... That's OK, then! It suits me at the moment - I seem to be sleeping very late since I had covid. |

I honestly see no reason why Avon goes doolally here. He makes a dumb decision which is outdated (being 50 yards from something, rather than metric) and then has an anxiety attack. I know he's worried he's losing it, but still, it seems very out of character. On the metric issue, I always find it amusing - so many centuries into the future, and we still haven't made up our minds which system we are using! Hi Anne! Well, we're now the next century along from when B7 was made and we haven't made up our minds, so why would the 3rd Calendar be any different? We drive in miles, fill our cars in litres, beer comes in pints, milk in litres. I miss the old days of pounds shillings and ounces! And you can buy wood in thicknesses measured in millimetres and lengths in feet and inches! "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Hi everyone. Sorry I'm late - my laptop decided to update just when I wanted it to switch on quickly. Referencing punk in 1982 is about par for the course, surely - by the time a popular movement becomes mainstream, it is usually pretty much over, isn't it? Just concerned that Nicky Rocker couldn't tell that it would look dated in no time and not at all 'futuristic'. Punk was over by 1979. The fact that people who weren't born until this century dress like that and think they are being avant garde doesn't mean that it's true. Then there's the Vietnam War language. Blech. I find the references to 'Gooks' very unsettling, bordering on offensive. This was written several years after the Vietnam war ended, I wonder if James Follett was unaware, or thought he was being clever, or what? There is no point being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes

On the Avon issue, I think he really is losing it - Rumours of Death weakened his confidence in his own judgment, Terminal (and especially being played so easily by Servalan) shattered it. Any small thing will now overthrow him. If it were me I'd understand it and I do think Avon is suffering badly by now, but I do find inconsistencies in this script, especially when the others follow him. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

I usually find it easier to visualize distances/quantities in imperial, but I never really learned how the different units relate to one another - is it 16 ounces 1 pound, 14 pounds 1 stone - or the other way around? However, when my scales got stuck in metric a couple of years ago, I found it very easy to convert to thinking of my weight in kilos, and now I naturally think that way. |

Atlan has a very odd accent - is it the actor's own, or is he putting it on? |

I mean, if we're talking anachronisms, why were there no girl Space Rats? Or are we back to a Seskas and Hommicks kind of thing? I mean, Dr P can't do all the housework AND solve the drive problems...

I've encountered people who were there (in Vietnam) who still speak that way when referring to 'foreigners' but it is unpleasant. James Follett could have invented his own cuss word. Yes, I definitely prefer centigrade - but I do rather like cups. I have a nice set of them, in brightly coloured plastic, which are very useful. |

I find the lounge rather odd - all those soft cushions don't really seem to fit the punk/hell's angels vibe of the Space Rats. Mybe they have taken the base over from someone else. |

Avon: "Who?" That is beyond callous. Never mind that she was dead either way, at least he could have acknowledged her sacrifice. So many reasons to dislike this episode, but that really takes the biscuit.

I mean, if we're talking anachronisms, why were there no girl Space Rats? Or are we back to a Seskas and Hommicks kind of thing? I mean, Dr P can't do all the housework AND solve the drive problems... There are girl Space Rats. They are the people being slobbered over on the lounge. Remember what Vila says about them being into violence and speed etc. Another anachronism is Murphy's Law. Is it anachronistic, though? Plenty of evidence still exists to support that Law! I find his riddles in 'Ultraworld' much worse - 'parking meteors'? Try explaining that to a modern audience! It would have transmuted into some other name entirely. Mr. Murphy wouldn't still be getting the credit and very likely it's meaning would have changed as well. After all, many sayings or terms invented only in the 19th century have changed considerably since then. Quite possibly - but why is that so much worse than the jokes in Ultraworld? Mind you, I understand a little thing spoiling an episode. I really hate Killer, because I can't get past the fact that Avon, Vila and Blake visit a space station where a deadly airborne virus is raging, and none of them worries about catching it. |

Just use equivalent cups for cups and use a chart if you can't remember the degree equivalences. I don't have a problem remembering them possibly because so many recipe books from the '70s and '80s had charts in them. Ah, but how big is a 'cup'? We only have mugs, in a variety of sizes... Luckily, we also have kitchen scales in metric & imperial. Anyway, I'm rubbish at any cooking that requires accurate measurement (eg baking), tend to bung everything into a pan and hope for the best! A metric cup is 250ml. Who cares what a US one is? Just use relative amounts. METRIC CUP??? I knew not of such a thing, thought it was just an American things. Now I''m proper confused! American metric cups are 240ml. They use cups because settlers didn't always have a set of scales handy when travelling about in their covered wagons etc etc. Allegedly. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

A metric cup is a quarter of a litre. The US uses it's own measures that relate not even to British Imperial quantities. That's why I use relative amounts. Check your local kitchen store to see if they have jugs with imperial (pints/cups) and metric (litres/cups) marked on them. If you find one it will be the best thing you ever bought. They are still readily available here even though we've had metric for ages. Want one? Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

I'm off to Sainsbury's after the pedicure (what an exciting day), and they have a good kitchen department... There is no point being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes

Rewatching this episode, I think that Avon's actions make sense in the light of his continuing decline. Because he no longer trusts his judgment, and because he is afraid that the others will not trust it either, he feels the need to prove to himself that he is utterly cold and ruthless. Having done this, he can relax a little again. |
