In which Avon is stupid, Vila is clever, and everybody gets to ride around on those cool buggy things...

Sorry for the late arrival of this thread. But I hope to be able to join you today!

Hi. Great to have you with us, Travisina. I may have to disappear at some point, because I have a house guest who might want breakfast, but I'm here for now.
This episode is not one I'd count as a favourite, but it's always fun to watch - I imagine it was fun to make, as well. It certainly shows how ruthless Avon can be if he needs to!

Hi Pilot,
That's one of my favourite of all Vila scenes, proving how he's not as stupid as he pretends to be Grin

I hope you can join us Travisina. This is definitely NOT one of my favourites. Nicholas Rocker was very anachronistic in referencing the punk movement which was essentially dead by this time. I find the costumes and language wince-worthy.

Hi Obsidian - yes I'm here! I'm going to get ahead and start, 'cos I have to dash away sharpish as soon as it's over.

Hi Pilot. Hope all is well with you. Don't believe a word Travisina says, they're all stupid, because they're trying to win against Servalan. And Vila often proves he's not as stupid as he's made out to be, but the others never realise it. They're the stipid ones. Except possibly Avon, who does know how useful Vila is.

I don't like them either. Too much glitter – as in Gary.

The punk movement was still hanging on in 1982 when I came back to England, but was becoming a bit passe, a bit of a joke (think Vyvyan in The Young Ones).

But oddly, now that several decades have passed, I don't mind the Space Rats as much as I did in the '80s. They have a kind of vintage charm - and more credible as a society on a distant planet than a contemporary statement. If you see what I mean.

It's been postponed for 2 weeks, because my Foot Lady had covid. I'm long overdue my regular telling-off for not moisturising my feet properly! Wink

I honestly see no reason why Avon goes doolally here. He makes a dumb decision which is outdated (being 50 yards from something, rather than metric) and then has an anxiety attack. I know he's worried he's losing it, but still, it seems very out of character.

That would make a great competition for the next Horizon Zoom. Or the much-delayed Tycecon2.

Moisturise your feet properly, Travisina. Your feet will end up looking like those on a Link otherwise. Wink

Well all yet another rewatch over for me. Been great as always & we'll catch up soon. Hope all are well & to fellow Australians here hope you're all safe from the floods. Here in Melbourne where I live we've only had minor rain. I live 45ks from Melbourne western suburbs.

Hi everyone. Sorry I'm late - my laptop decided to update just when I wanted it to switch on quickly.

Referencing punk in 1982 is about par for the course, surely - by the time a popular movement becomes mainstream, it is usually pretty much over, isn't it?

I expect it was hard to break spacials down to such short distances. Metric isn't all it's cracked up to be: yards are OK for the time.

On the metric issue, I always find it amusing - so many centuries into the future, and we still haven't made up our minds which system we are using!

On the Avon issue, I think he really is losing it - Rumours of Death weakened his confidence in his own judgment, Terminal (and especially being played so easily by Servalan) shattered it. Any small thing will now overthrow him.

Just concerned that Nicky Rocker couldn't tell that it would look dated in no time and not at all 'futuristic'. Punk was over by 1979. The fact that people who weren't born until this century dress like that and think they are being avant garde doesn't mean that it's true. Then there's the Vietnam War language. Blech.

Sorry - didn't mean to confuse you, Anne. As I understand it, Pilot starts his day early - really early! - so by the time we start, it's his bedtime. But look forward to the week after next, when our clocks will have changed....

Hi Anne!
Well, we're now the next century along from when B7 was made and we haven't made up our minds, so why would the 3rd Calendar be any different?

We drive in miles, fill our cars in litres, beer comes in pints, milk in litres. I miss the old days of pounds shillings and ounces!
