Rewatch Downunder, Saturday 31st May B9 Countdown
M1795537OCVirn
Starting at 7.30pm AEST and 10.30am BST

B9 Countdown
We don't hear much from the girls this week - presumably they're busy catching up with the housework again. Countdown is one of those suspense-filled stories where everyone comes up with a 'why didn't they just...?' which would have solved the problem without all the angst. The important thing here is that we meet Del - no, not him, the other one - and wish he'd joined the crew. Unusually, Del being another of Avon's old friends, they don't kill each other, but settle for a big argument, then kiss and make up.
Blake restores the balance by shooting a Federation officer, who discloses some of the information our heroes need but sneakily dies before he gets to the useful bit.

At last! A proper quiz.

Serum collar, lyophilising, rounded bottom (plastic or glass).

Sibilance, alliteration, internal, reverse, clustering, slant rhyme.

And the nine letters for your Countdown Conundrum are...T A W K S H Y T E

That's that Christopher Nolan film, isn't it?

For years it's been a mystery as to why Del Grant never popped up again in a televised episode. I have discovered however that the BBC did run an online poll* back in 1979 asking the audience of Noel Edmond's Multicolour SwapShop the question, which character would you like to see return, and what else would you like to see in that story?
The final result was:
1. Ven Glynd (with a demented bandaged Frenchman)
2. Secretary Rontane (alongside Fred Elliot)
3. Del Grant (fighting off a Welsh street-sign wielding Jenna)

David Maloney later stated the program only had the budget for the first two, but overall, the public got exactly what they asked for.

*Respondents could also phone in their response on 01 8118055

How well I recall stumbling on this during an ad break in TISWAS. Duly submitted the following answer on the back of a stuck-down envelope (in my best handwritten 'block capitals', as we used to call them): (i) Blake (I didn't quite understand the premise of the poll, having missed the start of the item) and (ii) Spit the Dog.

Joe Dredd
Meanwhile over in Australia I was reading the adventures of a time-travelling Adam Ant in “TV Tops” comic and wondering what the Spit the Dog strip was based on.

BlueyH
Spit the Dog was like Moloch but far more evil.

G'day Aussies. I might have to vanish at some stage as I have a house guest who may well want me to talk to her from time to time. But I hope you all enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed our pre-rewatch 'comments'. Rewatchers might be a bit thin on the ground today as Tyce and AnneA are unlikely to be joining us.

Well, I'm here, and BlueyH seems to be flickering in and out of this dimension as I watch.

And here's Obsidian. Hello Obsidian!

In this episode, Molly wears a hat and mangles the English language.

It's always odd how the log-on counter shows names, then they disappear, then they come back... I don't imagine people are really logging on and off and on.

Joe Dredd
Well, let's kick it off, shall we?

Obsidian
Finally made it here. My head is exploding. It needs a little rest. Too much to do with other people's lives.Shock

How are you Joe? MsVirn? Anyone else joining us?
Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Hi Obsidian, good to see you are not a figment of my imagination this evening.

I think it might be just you and me.

That's ok. We understand how to run a probability program.

I'm sorry to hear your day hasn't been the best. Any chance things will improve? It's always complicated when it's people.

Obsidian
Paul Shelley being suitably creepy. It's good to have a creepy Federation officer with some character.

He does a good job. And he's not too one-note as a character either - "You rebels will never triumph against the superiority of our glorious Federation!"

I'm sorry to hear that. It must be very difficult as well as demanding.

Exactly. He's single-minded but with depth. Could be because the episode was written by Uncle Tel.

The amount of work I HAVEN'T done over the last couple of years... Very stressful. Not as if I haven't already been there with my mother.

It's a really good episode. If only it didn't have that bit with Vila finding his way through the base. But, it has so many other good things going for it that it still makes the grade.

AnneArthur
Hello everyone. I was going to be meeting Tyce this morning, but she decided not to risk the long trip to York and the train possibly breaking down, when she has tickets for Voyage tonight, so I am still sitting on the sofa slobbing it in my pjs.

So, is this the longest initial sequence without our heroes?

HI!. House guest has kindly decided to leave a bit early. Where are we up to?

That sounds very stressful - my mother had dementia, so you have my sympathy.

Joe Dredd
Hi AnneA!

That's a good question. I think you are probably right.

Sorry to hear you'll miss out on Tyce's company. I'm sure she'd much rather visit you than twiddle her thumbs until this evening.

It is good. And I like the sets. Even though they're just all running around corridors, the way they're done, in different sectors, is effective. And there is a suitable number of bodies.

Vila being an idiot is a bit par for the course but you think he'd be more careful, being a thief and all. Maybe not a cat burglar.

Am I the only person who really wouldn't have wanted to see any more of Del Grant? He's a smug git: his remarks to Ralli - basically you do all the work, little lady, I'm going to WORRY like a real man - make me long to hit him, and he has a horrible voice. IMO he serves his purpose in introducing Anna and he relationship with Avon, then good riddance. But I bet Anna made Avon laugh with her wicked impersonations of him.

Hi AnneA. Are the trains breaking down these days? More than usual, that is? It is a long way to go for the day.
