Rewatch Downunder Saturday 1st June B9 Countdown
M1795537OCVirn
Summer start times: Downunder, 8.30pm, UK 10.30am

B9 Countdown
In which the rebels learn not to call the Federation's bluff. At least, not unless Blake and his pals happen to be passing by. Speaking of pals, Avon finds yet another of his acquaintances lurking in the shadows on Albion. I wasn't at all surprised to hear that this chap was a mercenary, and that he'd sworn to kill Avon. Young Kerr seems to attract them.
What else? Oh, yes - Blake shoots someone, then blackmails his dying victim into revealing the secret Blake came to find. Nice.
This episode sets the scene for both the search for Star One and Rumours of Death, so listen carefully, you might need those clues later.
(And in case the audience don't know how a countdown works, there's a helpful explanation about 25 minutes in.).

Hello, Aussies. How are you today?

OK, it's time to start, but I'm the only rewatcher. But am I worried? Why should I be worried? This is the Aussie rewatch after all.

Hi MsVirn. How are you? I'm in a frenzy of photographing and editing pics so that a collection can go off to NY on Monday/Tuesday – WAY behind time. Ably assisted by a cat, I might add. He's helping hold down my arm right now.
Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

A very important job! Hi there. I dion't suppose you're even thinking about Steventon yet, then!

A good episode with lots of layers. I watched it the other day and hisself came in, saw Paul Shelley and went "Haircut!" Profound. Shall we go?

Meanwhile, I'm ignoring my house guest for this. Mind you, she's in the shower atm, so it's not as bad as it sounds.

Oh, I'm thinking about Steventon big time, at the same time as doing everything else. How much ironing I have to do because all my summer clothes are still in the ironing basket...

Hi dodgyville. This is a good ep and, as MsVirn said above, sets the scene for much to follow.

Forecast to be about 18c with occasional showers, so don't go too wild on the 'summer' thing, Obsidian.

This rebel raid start is rather well done, really.

4m: The Federation are losing to the rebels and decide to blow up the place.

I like how it's implied the entire Federation is seething beneath an authoritarian calm. It makes Blake's rebellion seem more plausible. I love Series D but I rarely get that feeling.

I've been keeping an eye on the temps. We'd be wearing woollies in 18C. Grin

7m: Lobster suit! Although it looks a lot more crumpled than last time. Must've been all that rolling around in chalk quarries

Hello everyone. I'm gearing up for a depressing day of work - trying to finish this book off. It's like Achilles and the tortoise. (I just googled this to check that it was Achilles, and google suggested 'Achilles and the boy next door' - I'm going to have to look into that. And the people I am meant to be writing the book with are not in touch, so I have no idea what is going on! Good to have one of the better season 2 episodes to cheer me up, really.

Obsidian
Yes, the raid is well done. The Albian rebels are evidently quite well organised as they have uniforms.

Let's get this the right way round. The Federation exists to serve and protect its citizens, rebel. And the Federation always keeps its word (when it means blowing up rebels). Hence the rebels actually forced those in authority to set off the Bomb.

8m: A nice shot of the Liberator in orbit above the planet. There was even some lightning in the upper atmosphere until I realised it was just a blotch on the film.

Perhaps the chaos of the Andromedan war and its aftermath have made people appreciate order?

He does have more appealing outfits. I don't think that particular red is his colour.

My cat is investigating the electric cables - not a wise choice, I feel. I have shooed her away - I hope it doesn't persuade her that there is something worth investigating.

And it was meant to be warmer - but still cool and overcast. Where is summer?

No, I would have thought you were in the majority. I love it. It's typical off the wall June Hudson. I would have loved to have seen it with the leather studs still there. The people who unpicked them did a first class job.

10m: The rebels are talking about diffusing the bomb.

Christopher Boucher brings a UK Asimov vibe to his writing, Terry Nation brings a WW2 vibe. The attack on the base, the bomb, the fascists ... it's all very WW2. He was born in 1930 so I guess he never fought in it but he was well versed in how it all worked, it has an authenticity to it that serves B7 well.

I like him best in the black outfit he changes into in Aftermath, I think.

That meant he was 9 when it started and 15/16 ish by the end. The war would be all he saw/heard about. Definitely an impressionable age. And rationing etc went on a long time after that. Not to mention the rebuilding.

And both of them were well-versed in the rise of Maggie Thatcher and the neo-cons. It was very evident back in the day that they were commenting on the politics of the time.

16m: CAUDER: The Federation was bleeding us dry. They levied impossible demands on our economy, gave us no voice in our own government. We were little better than slaves on our own planet.

I genuinely love how evil the Federation is... so few sci-fi shows do the POLITICS of evil.

That's interesting. It would have been very much the reality he grew up with, I suppose.
