Rewatch Downunder - D9 Sand, Saturday 26th November
Travisina
Rewatch Australia: D9 Sand
Saturday 26th November 2022, 9.30am (UK) / 8.30pm (Australia)

In which Tarrants meets the Girl Next Door. The second episode penned by Tanith Lee, specially for Jacqueline Pearce (they were friends). Superb writing matched by superb acting.
Point to ponder: what would this ep have been like if it had been Avon instead of Tarrant? Or even Vila?

Hello peeps -
I'm here in theory, though I had to work this morning, and have discovered a small infestation of tiny spiders in the kitchen. So am deep cleaning that area. With vinegar. Any other advice would be welcome. I've heard they don't like horse chestnuts, but it's long past conker season.

So I won't be watching the ep, but will be dipping in and out of the thread to say hi to people and comment on the comments. If you see what I mean.

Just one comment @ Obsidian from last week - when you mentioned a Shadow necklace, I envisaged it made from Vila's teeth Grin

Such a delightful start to the thread, Travisina - and I don't mean either the spiders or the teeth. What do you have against spiders anyway?
Meanwhile... my pc took ages to get going today. Thought I was going to be late, and for SAND!!
But I think I'm here now. Where's everyone else?

Grin Grin Grin

It's still possible, just don't know where I'd find a bunch of human teeth, though I know I've got one – from a Late Roman/Early Byzantine tomb – somewhere.

It would be excellent if you could join us Travisina. And BTW, spiders are a very useful part of the ecosystem.

Are we really going to have to wait another 5 minutes?? It's SAND, for goodness sake.

Finished my Advent calendar yesterday. Now on with the rest of the Christmas cards. Thankfully I now have a printer again - thought I might have to write them all by hand for a while.
Maybe we can find you some spare teeth, between us?? Feds are good at that sort of thing.

You're doing well. I don't think we've done cards in years. I'm usually too pooped after making earrings for weeks.

Spare teeth reminds me: I might have a couple of my granny's somewhere. Grin

She's absolutely sick of Reeve. I wonder how long they'd been stuck on that ship together to get them to this level of nastiness.

Hi all! This is one of my favourite episodes - it, along with Powerplay, City at the Edge of the World and Blake, are teh ones I remember from when I watched the series as a teenager. I disagree with Travisina - I think the Servalan/Avon relationship has been worked out by now, and Servalan/Vila is just mutual indifference - but actually, in earlier episodes, she talks about Tarrant quite a lot, and with approval (and why not, after all, he is decidedly easy on the eye?), and this is Tanith Lee, again, giving us something a bit different. And, IMO, it works.

Dropping in on a web, like spider-man...
I've nothing against spiders - quite fond of them, actually - useful and fascinating creatures. But this looks as though there was a Nest with Eggs that have recently hatched, and spiderlings are running (and jumping, and swinging) all over the place. And hubby is arachnophobic, so...

Speaking of advent calendars, does horizon have one this year? I couldn’t find it the other day when I went looking.

Hi Tyce, Hi Anne. No time for talking - Servalan's up next...

PS. No, She's still after Avon, but Tarrant's there for the taking, as it were. She doesn't see Vila as a challenge, which may be a mistake - he might prove more fun to 'work with' than either of the others.

Hi Anne, good to have you here. I missed this series entirely back in the day. I was living in Damascus when it came out. Servie is doing a try-out with Tarrant, and you know things would have been very different with the other blokes. We saw Servie and Vila in Traitor. VERY different.

Hi Anne!
This is one of my faves too, but my kitchen is in Assassin-mode (IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SCORPIO, NOT CANCER). And Tanith Lee's version of Servalan + alpha male is excellent. I was just speculating what would have happened if it had been Avon and Servalan ("I need to kill her myself"Wink or Vila (who uses his nifty skill to figure out a way of escaping from the base, because he and Servie don't fancy each other in the least and the Sand rolls its eyes, figuratively speaking, and lets them go)

I agree that she's still after Avon - it was more that I think that we have seen quite a bit of that relationship. And yes, any personable man is fair game to Servalan.
