UK Rewatch - C9 Sarcophagus
trevor travis
The episode: Colin Nine – Sarcophagus (Carry On Kissing Corpses aka Carry On Shipping)
The date: Tuesday, August 30th, 2022
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which writer Tanith Lee comes into the series and gives us a Liberator-based fantasy-based episode which is very character-driven and delightfully different, as well as an episode where the actual writer starts ‘shipping Cally and Avon, as the subtext becomes the text. Also, Vila does a few magical tricks and Dayna starts singing. All together now: “I left my world to wander in this endless midnight sky, for space is just a starry night where no suns ever rise." And Jan Chappell looks absolutely stunning as the undead alien and puts in a fabulous performance.

Episode in a word: Necrophilia.
Character to cheer: Avon saves the day in this one, so it’s him. Considering his metaphorical death at the end of the previous episode, he’s actually in pretty fine form.
Character to boo: I appreciate the Alien was manipulating events due to extent during the argument between Tarrant and Avon, but Tarrant was still being a right git.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Given the only extras in this episode are in the opening scene and in heavy make-up, it has to be one of the main cast. Let’s go for: Steven Pacey (Tarrant) who played the vicar in Troubles and Strife, a sitcom from the 1980s. Not a particularly great sitcom from what I recall, but it was on prime-time television.
Best exchange: AVON: “Regret is part of being alive. But keep it a small part.” CALLY: “As you do?” AVON: “Demonstrably.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Being Blue
Vote Og.

I love this episode. Great drama. Great performances. Great writing. And the supercharged looks between Cally and Avon...Ship ahoy, indeed.

Sarcophagus, or, How To Use A Giant Lozenge On An Magic Ring To Stop An Alien Coffin.

When crashing an alien funeral,
Your telepath better be dutiful.
She'll abide Villa's knavery and Tarrant's proud bravery,
But she's most angry when she is beautiful.

Have fun watching 'Sarcophagus'. I'll be giving it the widest of berths, naturally, my contrarian view being that it's a real shocker. Having read the script (courtesy of M1etc), I'd lay 75% of the blame on the director and only 25% on the writer. For instance, nowhere does it say: "Tarrant runs down the corridor in gold robes that make him look like a total t**l with a Gloria Swanson fixation" or "ensure this scene is SO glacier-paced the viewer completely loses the ability or the will to remain conscious". As a minimum, the director should have had a stiff word with the costume designer and straightened out the more obvious nonsenses in the script.

Still, no accounting for taste (yours or mine!).
Meanwhile back in the year one...

Dear Mr Huggy, thankfully I did not have a mug of tea anywhere near the keyboard!
And as for this episode? I love it. No idea why as it is completely different from any of the others. But for me, the thing I love most is the fantastic camera shot as Avon confronts the alien. Mr David White (chief cameraman) on the top of his game.

This is not one of my favourite episodes. Probably my fault as the rest of you seem to love it. Perhaps you can change my mind. Otherwise I will be bored!!
I look behind me, what do I see? A pair of golden wings seem to be attached to me.

Good evening, everyone. I continue in my quest to understand why some of you actually think this episode is so good. Admittedly, Avon gets a good line or two, and Tarrant shows his true colours, but as for the rest of it..
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it.

I must admit on 1st seeing these opening scenes I thought wtf!? But then I recalled how much I hated Tom Baker's intro as the Dr and how brilliant he turned out...

I've had a thought - maybe I'm not keen on the beginning (especially) because I have a 'thing' about masks? Anyone else feel the same?

In this case that's half the fun, which B7 actor is playing which part.

I'm now thinking of that episode in the Next Generation where the corpses all sat up!
