UK Rewatch - C6 City At The Edge Of The World
trevor travis
The episode: Colin Six - City At The Edge Of The World (Carry On Space Thief)
The date: Tuesday, August 9th, 2022
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which Vila is the hero, gets (and loses) the girl and saves the day; Colin Baker booms a lot in a role that was made for him and gets to wear far more many studs than Paul Darrow; and, after Servie’s refit of Space Command HQ last week, we find out what happened to the interiors of her office (the Keezarnians nicked them during the Intergalactic War, and painted them black).

Episode in a word: Vila.
Character to cheer: There’s only one person it could be. This is the perfect showcase for everyone’s favourite thief, and was apparently written after Michael Keating told Chris Boucher that his young daughter had told him after watching an episode: “Daddy, you’re stupid”. Vila is the totally at the centre of the episode – and is brave when he needs to be and clever when he needs to be, without ever slipping out of character.
Character to boo: Tarrant’s a bit of a git to Vila at the start of the episode. I guess we should credit him for later realising that he was wrong.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: I think we all know Colin Baker (Bayban) was Doctor Who, while Valentine Dyall (Norl) was the Black Guardian in the same show. But let’s go for a less obvious one. Carol Hawkins (Kerril) was in two Carry On films, Carry On Abroad (1972) and Carry On Behind (1975), two of the better Carry On films from the 1970s.
Best line: Although there’s also the brilliant “Babe” dialogue, pride of place has to go to Vila’s monologue to two speechless Keezarnians delivered perfectly by the sublime Michael Keating: “Is that where we're going? It's miles away. I mean why couldn't I have teleported closer in?” [pause] “Hey? They say too much walking's bad for you, you know. Makes you go deaf. Look what it's done for you. Listen, sooner or later one of you's going to have to speak to me. Well, speak to me one of you! All right, that's it. No speak, no walk. My feet hurt and I didn't want to come anyway.” [sits down] “[Of] course, I'm totally lost, you realise that. Yes, of course you realize that. I don't suppose you'd consider taking me back to where you met me. No, of course you wouldn't. All right, you've talked me into it.” [gets up and walks]

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Up The Space Maternity Ward.
Vote Og.

One of Bayban's chappies is a guy called Chris Chivers. He was at Maximum Power (a few years ago now) but I still recognised him and showed him my autograph book that he had signed back in the 80s!

Now the most important question is, and I blame One Spare Part for this because she started it...Are there any Wet Nellie's in this episode?
Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold!

Now hang on a sec...I MAY have mentioned wet nellies once or twice but that is no excuse to look for them in EVERY episode....you wet nelly.
Now, are there any soft-to-the-touch outfits in this episode?

I believe there could well be some nice soft to touch outfits in this episode...and some rather fetching sandals are on show.

This week only, buy one Limerick, get a second one free.

These poor peasant people need savin'
From a horrible villain named Bayban.
Vila gets the girl, and saves their whole world,
But in the end goes home with Avon.

There was a berserker named Bayban
Whose mum fostered his misbehavin'
But a thief steals his girl, and discovers Home World,
While the black guardian chats with Avon.

One of several third-series episodes I just can't deal with, I'm afraid. I can't cope with the overall vibe, the excessive cringe quota and the fact that it's such an outlier in terms of Vila's characterisation. The most I can say for it is that at least it's not Sarcophagus. For a show that got so many things right, when B7 got things wrong - well, crikey, it REALLY made a right pig's ear of them.
Meanwhile back in the year one...

I am sorry I wont be here. It is our club Flower Show. I have just come home after helping set up. And I shall go back at 8 to see the results.
I look behind me, what do I see? A pair of golden wings seem to be attached to me.

Starring Collin Baker as the shouty villain, because we already used Brian Blessed and Bruce Purchase.

I would respectfully disagree. Though it is a bit of a retcon, it points out Vila's tendency to act like a fool when acting like a fool is advantageous, (As explained in Stardrive?) and to act intelligently when survival depends on it (as in not having Bayban think you are useless).

And good evening from one of the knobblier bits of the UK (Cumbria).
Sorry I'm late. Not a favourite episode for me, either, but Colin Baker makes up for the weirdness.

The phrase Barbarians at the Gate never specifies if they are trying to force the gate open, or trying to keep it closed.
