>>>And Travisina has sent the following: 5th March is World Book Day. What would be our heroes' favourite books - and why? 8th March is International Women's Day. Let's hear it for our Intergalactic Women! Of course we have our Liberator / Scorpio gals, but there are many one-episode characters: Maja Varon, sundry Mutoids, Altas, Kerril, Dr Plaxton, Franton, Vena, Verlis, the Seska, Selma, Inga, Chenie etc etc What were their lives like before encountering the Liberator / Scorpio? And - if they manage to survive to the end of the episode - what were their lives like afterwards? Many thanks yet again, Travisina. I wonder what our creatives will come up with this time? "You're not sulking, I hope?"

My Favourite Book of Stories Editor’s note: Original books which survived into the new calendar era have become expensive to restore – or insure – and are necessarily restricted to Alpha-class citizens only. The fact that certain of our heroes insisted on retaining a ‘liberated’ paper copy can perhaps be excused. And although protective gloves are strongly advised, page-turning still holds a charm of its own. Cally checked herself: she should not be doing this! But her duty watch on the flight deck was done: the down-time was her own. Sleep was impossible – the temptation was too strong. She needed to immerse herself in that other world again, to thread her own psyche into those past, fictional lives and ask herself – what if it was me? That was the point of the exercise, surely? As a telepath, she could never know what it was to be human, forever separate from others. It needed a special key to open the door of that unknowable experience, and she had found it in the work of human writers. Certainly not all. Only a few. And of them, the one to which she kept returning wrote for children – supposedly, though sometimes it felt..universal? Cally had no experience of young humans, for whom life was apparently a constant and intensely individual adventure of discovery: no past, no future, only the now. So unlike her own childhood! She found it addictive, intoxicating. But it was not something she wanted to share, not even with her close friends. From the bottom of her storage unit she retrieved the box and gently unwrapped her illicit treasure. Having checked that the cabin door was locked, she curled up on the bunk, opened the book at random and read again, "They might or they might not," said Winnie-the-Pooh. "You never can tell with bees." "You're not sulking, I hope?"

I would never have paired that particular book with Cally, but it works beautifully! |

Nice, I can definitely see Cally being a Winnnie-the-Pooh fan - and vice versa! |

What an engaging mini-yarn, M1! I'm picturing Cally putting Fifty Shades of Black Leather briefly to one side, earphones plugged in - maybe David Bowie's 'Loving the Alien' - and losing herself in a bit of whimsical Winne. |

Essential Reading "What are you doing? What's that you're working on?" asked Vila as he entered the workroom. "Are you building another Orac? Please tell me you're not building another Orac, one Orac is one too many Oracs" "Shut up Vila" replied Avon. "I'm thinking. Not a concept you'd be familiar with" "Oh come on, don't be like that. Tarrant says we're nearly ready to go, are you coming?" "Almost, I'll join you in 5 minutes" Vila caught site of an old book next to Avon, half hidden under a pile of components. "What's that?" he asked. "I never took you for the literary type." "It's nothing, go away" said Avon, just a hint of red colouring his cheeks. "Oh come on Avon. We've nearly run out of wine, and I've read every other book on the base at least 5 times, I could do with something new to stimulate my mind" "I suspect that wouldn't take much" muttered Avon, concentrating once again on a colourful circuit board. Vila lunged and grabbed the book, turned it over, and stared incredulously at the title, Computers For Dummies "But, why would you need this?" stammered Vila. "Oh, now wait a minute, have you been stringing us all along with this 'I'm a cold-hearted computer expert' for all these years?" Is this where you get all you brilliant insights from, oh wait till I tell everyone" "SHUT UP VILA, and give me my book. Without it we'd all have been dead long ago. How else would we have known to turn Zen off and On again to fix him." Avon calmed his voice "Listen, pehaps we can come to some sort of arrangement to forget this little incident" "Oh my" replied Vila, "I'll have to have a think about this. I really do have something over you now don't I?" At that moment, Tarrant's voice announced over the tannoy "Flight path to Malodar programmed in, this is your show Avon, you've got 2 minutes to get here before take off" As Vila left the room, chuckling to himself, Avon's eyes narrowed, and he muttered to himself "Perhaps it's time you and me go on a little trip together once we reach Malodar..." I look exactly as Avon reasoned I would.

Black Book or Book 'em, Ganno… “And I said, ‘Gan’s favourite book is probably the one he’s colouring in at the moment!’ Lol! And then I said, ‘As for flaky Blakey – or Flaky Pastry as I like to call him behind his back – well, it’s gotta be How to Kill Friends and Irritate People. Double lol! Boy, I was on form! Call it a God-like gift of the gab!” “Knob-like gift of the gob, more like, Avon. Why the good mood? I’m guessing all your witty repartee helped you ‘pull’ on that last planet we visited? What was it called? That’s right! Spee.” “A gentleman never tells, Vila. Or at least, this gentleman never tells Vila. But yes, I may have had a quick tryst. I’ve got a knack for that sort of thing. It’s in the tryst action. Can’t beat a bit of Spee dating. [Singing] You’re more than just a number in my little black-leather book…” “Probably shouldn’t admit this, Avon. But I had a quick flick through that notorious black-leather book of yours when you left it behind that time – you know, in the bar on that big home improvement/DIY space station circling that arid Sahara-like planet. What was the space station called again? That’s it! Orbital Sander! And the bar was called…” “Bar B&Q… WAIT! YOU LOOKED IN MY LITTLE BLACK-LEATHER BOOK? The one where I keep the names of everyone super-special to me?” “That’s the one. Don’t know what you’re worried about. Only had one name in it. Yours. Not even Cally’s. Even though it’s obvious even to someone of moderate intelligence (so not Gan, then) that you carry a torch for her. Albeit only pocket-sized and battery-operated…” “Gotta be practical… And she didn’t have room for it in her handbag.” “Anyway, her name was on a loose piece of paper that fell out of the book when I opened it. It was like you’d made notes about her. Must have been just after you accidentally broke her lipstick that time and she got really angry about it. Oh yes, I remember the words you’d written so well… “SUPER CALLY – FRAGILE LIPSTICK – CAN BE QUITE FEROCIOUS…” “You’re bang out of order, Vila. But I’m determined not to let you spike my good spirits. Because I’ve some exciting news for you! Very soon I’m going to be a…published author…” “No! Published by who?” “A publisher. Specialising in sci-fi. They bit my hand off.” “Maybe they did the same thing to Travis once… Forgive me laughing, Avon! ” “You may mock, Vila! You may laugh! It’s actually a comedy book, full of my rapier-like dry wit and trademark sardonic humour. Just wait till you read it! No, you won’t be laughing then!” “I’ll bet.” “Yes, I’ve always thought of myself as a bit of a wit…” “Whereas I’ve always thought of you as a bit of a sh…” “I’ll put you down for a signed copy!” “Great! I’d like it signed by Larry Grayson.” “Tough. It’ll be signed by me and no-one else. In fact, you can have the very first copy of Bloke’s 6, the strange tale of a bloke called Bleak – a smug, self-satisfied numpty – and his spaceship Gliberator, wasting everyone’s time as he drifts aimlessly through an interminable series of tepid space adventures with a bunch of no-hopers and someone called Rave-on. Any resemblance to any person, living or dead, being entirely coincidental, of course…” “Of course. And how does it all end? Does Rave-on save the day?” “Well, put it this way, Vila. The last chapter’s simply called…’Bleak’.” |

Well here goes, this is my little effort.... I've always like the episode Deliverance. For me it was the episode that revealed our rather nice computer expert wasn't as cold, or machine like as he wanted everyone to think.... To Wait No More She had waited so long, almost a life time, but still he had not appeared; the unnamed Lord who would fulfil the prophecy of Deliverance. But today was different. Meegat had arisen from her small bunk just behind the silent room, filled with strange instruments that no-one could understand, and gone to the one window that looked out onto the surface of her war ravaged planet. Something had made her go to that door and look out through the small glass opening. She had heard voices; not the strange grunts that the scavengers made when trying to pry their way in; but actual words. She looked out, but the two strangely dressed figures had gone. Normally, she would have gone about her usual round of checking on the sick and dying. There were many of those and she had buried many, but this time...she waited. And it was well that she had. The knocking on the door was incessant. She quickly looked and, this time, saw three strangely dressed strangers. Without hesitating, she opened the door and the three almost fell in. Then she saw him. The unnamed Lord who would come and fulfil the prophesy. And she spoke his name... ...Avon. She watched as the three inspected the instruments on the silent control room. She watched the lights suddenly illuminate. She told him of Deliverence...and he understood. She watched him leave to find the other follower... ...and waited for his return. And then Deliverance was fulfilled and she realised that the Lord Avon would soon leave. She showed him the rest of the complex; the makeshift hospital that housed those who were slowly dying; she showed him the place of the dead, where one day she, too, would be laid to rest. She hoped that maybe he would stay, just as she had to stay to watch over and care for those who still lived. But it was not to be. He said his goodbye in private, away from the rest of his followers, and for a moment she thought she saw hesitation in those dark eyes; maybe even regret. Then he was gone. She thought him a God, but he insisted that he wasn’t. He was just a man, he said. But to Meegat whose long vigil was now over, he would always be Lord Avon and as she regaled those that she cared for with tales of Deliverance and its fulfilment, she remembered and hoped that he would always remember her. Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold! Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!! Genuine question: does anyone read my ficlets? No problem if the answer's 'no', but it'd be good to know if they're surplus to requirements so I'd don't fritter away any more time on them. |

Raises other hand, I do. Always. But I try not to comment on everything, because otherwise I'd end up on almost every thread.

I always read the ficlets I like to see how others use the prompts to form an idea. And I've read the others this month and it seems we are all on the same wavelength....muggins here was going to have our heroes find a book depositary...and you guessed it, all the books mentioned by the others were in it...I even thought of a whole shelf load of Reader's Digest Editions!!! Which I have in abundance in my own house!!!! Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold! Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!!
