This month, Travisina sends us: September is associated with Vulcan, the Roman god of fire (not Spock!). [The Great Fire of London started on 2nd September 1666. Coincidence?] Ficlets on the theme of FIRE, with or without gods / coincidences. PIRATES 19th September is International Talk Like a Pirate Day https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...irate_Day Will the Amagons be celebrating...? ![]() Arrrrr! "You're not sulking, I hope?"

How many of you knew there was a Pirate day? Come on, be honest! I did because I used to work with a man who celebrated it. He was an American, and had once been a submariner in the US navy. |

THE DIRTY OVEN (NOT IN SPACE) Place: 'Blake’s Bakery', Pudding Bowl Haircut Lane, Verycheapside, London Time/date: Two of the clock, after the noon, day of the Sun, 2nd of September 16 of the 66 “Feast your eyes on this little bad boy, Vila! It’s what I call my….Sarcophagus Cake!” “Do you want me to make it disappear, Blake? And, yes, you can interpret that in at least two ways.” “To be absolutely honest, it is a bit Marmite. Probably because I added a bit of Marmite. It won’t be to everyone’s taste. Especially if they’ve got taste. But just wait till Avon sees it! It’ll blow his new Great Big Banana & Succulent Nuts creation clean out of the water!” “He’s just popped out for a coffee. To St Arbuck’s. You know. One of those new-fangled coffee houses rapidly establishing themselves as hubs for commerce and social interaction here in Restoration London.” “Thank you, A J P Master-Tailor… Oh look! Here’s Gan parading his massive macaroons! I must say, Vila, just to blow my own sackbut, setting up an artisan bakery right here in the squalid, cramped, fire-hazard-y heart of our great capital city really was one of my best ideas to date.” “For sure. But only relatively speaking. Because it was still a bit sh*t.” “Hallo, peeps!” “For the thousandth time, Avon, I’m not Samuel Pepys… And where have you been? Vila’s just been showing me his Upside-Down Cake, which he’s had a bit of a nightmare with.” “How can you have ‘a bit of a nightmare’ with something as basic as an Upside-Down Cake?” “I had the recipe upside-down, Avon. So the cake’s turned out upside-down. Which means it’s the right way up. Which is the wrong way up for an upside-down cake…” “Well, I feign surprise, Vila. Truly I do. And what about Jenna and Cally. I hear they’re currently collaborating on a Blake Cake. Tricky creation, by all accounts. Superficially impressive but absolutely f*ck all going on inside. Cavernously hollow. Anyway, Blake, I said ‘hallo, peeps’ as in ‘people’. Not ‘Pepys’ as in ‘eminent diarist’. Speaking of which, on my way into the bowels of Blake’s Bakery here – and I noticed the oven could do with a bloody good clean, by the way – I took the liberty of having a peep in your diary. Highly illuminating. Well, at least it was highly illuminating when I set fire to it…” “YOU SET FIRE TO MY DIARY? WHY?” “Because I don’t much care for personal animus, that’s why. There’s even an admission that you chose premises for Blake’s Bakery here in squalid, cramped, fire-hazard-y Pudding Bowl Haircut Lane as a barbed dig against my trademark Series Three hairstyle. Even though perfect commercial premises were available in Kevin-Keegan-Scrunch Street, which (for some reason) you decided not to acquire…” “Well, I hope you were careful what you did with the flaming remnant of my journal. I haven’t appointed a Fire Officer for the business yet. Till now. Vila, I’m appointing you Fire Officer for the business! Accountable to me and the bored (which means Avon). I’m holding you personally responsible for any fires on these premises, especially those that may or may not spread with terrifying speed through the rest of Restoration London.” “Oh, OK, Blake. Well, we’ll be needing a Fire Assembly Point, for starters. I really must insist on that.” “Easily done, Vila. Basically, in the event of fire, make sure everyone stands outside the building. Not inside the inferno. There. Sorted. Any more urgent fire-related matters need discussing? Avon?” “Yes, the dirty oven. It’s an obvious fire hazard. All that carbon. Smoke and sparks everywhere. And what’s cooking in there now, spluttering dangerously away? Not another batch of Blake’s Buns (the Super-Spongy Ones)?” “Naturellement! Blake’s Buns (the Super-Spongy Ones)! Mm! Délicieux! They’re selling like hot cakes. In pairs, of course. Two for the price of bun.” “Really. Just one more question, then.” “What’s that, Avon?” “Can anyone else smell burning?” Edited by Cygnus Bazza on 06-09-2025 21:49 |

How many of you knew there was a Pirate day? Come on, be honest! I did mainly because it's a Day Away from one of my children's birthday. I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing

A Ha me hearties...I've had so much fun writing this prompt that I completely forgot about the other one AND I've gone over the word limit as well!! Sorry about that, but it does have that rather nice computer expert being very brave again....at his least favourite place...Seaton Tramway!!!!! Ahoy There!! “It’s Mr Seaton again, Blake.” Jenna smiled as she delivered that message. “Now what? I’m beginning to wish we had never found that tramway...” “You don’t mean that. After all, you’ve had so much fun.” “As long as I don’t have to be a Santa’s Little helper again...” “It’s like this, Blake,” Mr Seaton began, “I’ve an idea to make things a bit more interesting on the trams. I’m thinking of having a Pirates’ Theme Day. What do you think?” What Blake thought was neither here nor there....the others decided it was a great idea and so the Liberator was soon on its way to Seaton...although not quite all the others were in agreement. “I am not going to demean myself again at the behest of that man and his outrageous Tramway,” Avon declared. “Don’t be such a grouch,” Vila said. “Or we will make you walk the plank!!" Gan grinned. “You know, I’ll just go and try out that Amusement Arcade,” said Vila. “You’ll do no such thing,” Cally replied, grabbing Vila’s arm and pointing him in the right direction,” First of all we have to get our costumes sorted out.” Vila frowned, “Did they have lady pirates in the old days?” “Yes!!!” both Jenna and Cally replied, “And according to Orac they were worse than the men!” “Not joining in, Avon?” Blake asked,” The first batch of guests are due soon.” “You seem to have had a change of heart about becoming a ‘pirate’.” “It makes a change from fighting the Federation.” “I’m somewhat concerned about the number of Black Beards and the like. I will make sure we don’t suddenly find ourselves being keel hauled...” “What?!” The Pirate’s Theme day was in full swing with each tram being regaled with stories of treasure ships being boarded and daring battles between pirates and unlucky crew. But something was worrying Avon. The number of ‘pirates’ didn’t add up. Mr Seaton sensed something was wrong. “Something bothering you, Avon?” “Yes....Mr Seaton. Just how many Pirates have you hired?” “Oh, another one turned up just after Blake and he was really in character. Even had his own eye patch.” “What? Where is he?” “He insisted on going on the single decker tram with Blake.” “Which tram?” “That one based on a boat; the open air one. Every one loves that one.” “Turn this tram round now!” “What?” “NOW!” Mr Seaton had to change the pole round and then went at full speed back towards Blake and the open top tram. “When will we catch Blake?” “On the loop section. What are you going to do?” “What I always do!” Blake was staring down the sharpened blade in Travis’ hand. “You really should be careful about sending replies to requests for your company, Blake .” “And you should be careful about passing trams...” “What........?” The children on the tram cheered as another ‘pirate’ jumped from the roof of the passing tram and at gunpoint, made the mysterious stranger stand on the safety rail, before being unceremoniously pushed into the river below the bridge. “If anyone is going to walk the plank,” Avon began, “It isn’t going to be me!” “Brilliant,” Mr Seaton declared, “I’m going to include that on every journey!!!” Blake looked at Avon. “It seems that you have a new career!” Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold! Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!!
