Rewatch Downunder Saturday 8th July C2 Powerplay

It would’ve been more realistic if Cally had told Tarrant and Dayna to introduce themselves to Zen - probably while Avon stood nearby protesting. Having Avon do it is out of character.

That dome looks fairly real. Probably part of Oldbury power station.

Vila looks quite good in that brown suede. Better than some of the things he's had to wear.

He does. And he gets chamois a few times, as in that final, laced shirt which really suits him. The very devil to keep clean though.

I love how that starts: "Once a year Swedes celebrate their birthday." Yeah, uh-huh.

Ha ha. Although better than if you’re North Korean, they celebrate their first birthday, the day they’re born and the second birthday on the first of January. So if you’re born on 31 December on the following day, you’re two years old. Then from there you’re two years older than if you were anywhere else in the world.

I love all the dials and whirry things. They'd have looked good in one of my father's old substations. Nothing digital at all.Grin

They're very good.

OK, I have to go now. Thanks for the rewatch, and the birthday wishes. I won't be around next week - see you the week after!

How come nurses always look smug when they're taking you away on a trolley/gurney?

How do they work that?

For decades my father thought he was a year younger than he really was because the records in Ceylon (and by his parents) had been lost.

Have a lovely rest of your day AnneA. Enjoy the picnic and cake. We'll sing Happy Birthday to you in assorted languages and raise a toast.

Hope the next couple of weeks go well for you.

Bother, it's finished. I was just starting to think it wasn't such a bad episode after all, and then it goes and ends. Oh well.

Oh, that's how. Except that the day you're born equals zero. A lot of places births aren't recorded until you know the child is likely to survive. That's how my father ended up having his birth recorded a year later.

I know. The bit where Tarrant and Dayna are introduced to Zen all slip past very quickly.

That must’ve been strange for him.

They’re not sure if the turning one the day you’re born thing comes from including the time you are in the womb (rounded up to a year of course) or if it simply dates back to a time before their number system had the number zero.

The celebration of your birthday on 1 January relates to the fact that everyone is supposed to be the same and focused on society and the leadership rather than individuals.

Birthdays, huh. I've just had mine. A whole year to wait for the next. Unless I celebrate my half-birthday (a cunning plan to get extra cake, invented by my husband).

Have a good week, down there, you Aussies. See you next time, for an explosive episode.
Maybe I should start the thread now, while I remember.

The last bit I do understand. People didn't used to celebrate birthdays; it's quite a recent thing – part of the increasingly (and not very helpful) individualistic notions promulgated by the USA-ans.

Actually, the Romans celebrated birthdays: there's an invitation to a birthday party on one of the Vindolanda tablets

Not quite so recent as all that!

Not in our society though. My mother's family didn't and even my dearly beloved's family didn't (must have been horrid as kids). You might acknowledge it, but all the hoo-ha is fairly recent. And I was referring to the prols, not to the gentry, who could afford to.
