So Blake admits that Travis is the better strategist, and leader of men. And possibly a better shot, since Blake didn't kill Travis. Good to know, Blake. Travis is very competent here. But he has a sore eye! He's allowed a bit of shouting now and then. He's a brilliant tactician, until the Feds re-educate him and turn him into Travis 2. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Servalan's frock doesn't work for me. I like the collar decoration but the under-sleeves are horrible, and the whole thing is too baggy. Don't think Jacs had had much chance to take June H on one side for that 'little talk' at this stage. I like the collar, but the material doesn't hang well. I rather like the long silver sleeves, but the under-dress is probably having a bad effect on the one on top. Agreed. It's very 70s tho', with the longer-sleeved thing worn under something short-sleeved. I remember doing that only too well and cringing at the thought. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

He does have a bit of a two year-old tantrum there which is a tad unhinged. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

June Hudson didn't design Servalan's dress or any of the costumes at this stage. It was Barbara Lane.

Ok, I’m off. See you next week. Good luck with the recording. We'd better lock in Tyce-Con II soon too. When you're ready. Have a good week. Enjoy those anti-inflammatories! Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

|Bother. It's gone and finished. Oh well, there's always next week. (Or in my case, Tuesday). Apologies from Travisina for missing this rewatch. This time she does have a good excuse - she's off tonight on her next trip to Israel. Thanks for the company and comments. I suppose the real question we should be asking is how on earth did Anne learn Old French without a time machine. Take care, folks. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

It occurs to me now that Servalan's long white dress might have been influenced by Princess Leia's in Star Wars - it's a sign of how much she made it her own that I'm only just thinking this now. Surely Star Wars wasn't released until after they'd started recording this? I think I remember seeing Star Wars in the summer of 1977 - this was aired in the spring of 1978. How much earlier would it have been filmed? Star Wars only opened to limited US theatres in May 1977. I can't find the exact dates for filming B7, but they'd done months of filming before the first ep went to air in Jan 1978. But all the publicity would be up by May 1977 - the stills, the posters, the trailers, all of which would feature Princess Leia in a flowing white dress. No, don't think so. It wasn't opened to wider release until after they'd done their limited run. Apparently, one of the directors did go to see it after it came out in the UK and went "Crikey! We shouldn't even be attempting this". But they did it anyway and aren't we glad they did. Google gives it as appearing at a number of film festivals in Europe in the summer/autumn of 1977, and the UK seems to be about the last country where it opened. Perhaps I am forgetting how much that was a different world (a seven month gap between something opening in the US and the UK seems inconceivable now) but I also remember it as a very slick publicity machine, with all sorts of tie-ins up and running from the start. It seems unlikely that people working on a sci-fi TV series would be unaware of a major sci-fi film scheduled to open in the UK just before they aired, and would eagerly examine trailers, posters, publicity stills etc. |

Actually, I taught myself from a book, after doing modern French in school. Hope Travisina has a good time in Israel! Have a good week MsVirn. |

The model filming for this episode, the first piece of filming for the series, took place at Bray Studios on 15 August 1977. Live action filming of Blake's 7 began on 26 September that year at Ealing film studios with scenes set on the spacecraft London for the episode Space Fall. Filming continued at Ealing and on location, and then moved into the studios at BBC Television Centre in November... The recording of the first series of Blake's 7 was completed on 15 March 1978." I didn't see Star Wars until way later. Waste of time IMHO, except for Harrison Ford. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

FYI, Google says Star Wars wasn't released in the UK until 27 December 1977.

But it must have been the summer of 1978 when I saw it. I saw them all when they first came out - they were real events at my school, and everyone talked about them. My brother had a complete set of trading cards, and I still have a mini R2D2 on my desk that I bought back then. In contrast, I didn't see the first two series of Blake's 7, although I think my mother and brother saw at least series 2. |

Yes, it opened in London in December 1977 - but, as I say, there would have been trailers in cinemas from the autumn, posters, reports from film festivals and the States, so I'm still sticking with my theory that there is at least the possibility of influence. But, apart from featuring rebels and a totalitarian regime, and the rebels being the ones we are supposed to be supporting, they are very different beasts - Star Wars has the effects, but Blakes 7 has the dialogue and attitude! |
