Jacs is SO good in this. Again. She says so much without speaking - which is what Justin - and on this occasion, most of the rest - don't manage to do. I wonder what her opinion of the episode was!

Justin really is a piece of work - but the Dayna relationship makes him even more creepy. If it had been Cally he had been involved with, we would be focussing on the ethics of his work with the animals, rather than his involvement with a minor.

For someone who doesn't know much, Ardus knows a lot about Bucol 2. Wouldn't be in the script just for a bit of exposition, would he? Oh, and for showcasing Servie's evil deeds.

The way most of them are reciting their lines, it's as if they were pushed out onto the sets by the director at the end of pointy sticks and are going "Must we?"

Tyce I've been to Quybeanne ( apologies for the miss spelling) years ago. Nice neat town, narrow streets though. Nice friendly people.

Agreed Queanbeyan is a nice place. I lived there for about 5 years. Sadly it is very low lying, and the town that always gets flooded when there is heavy rain.

Another case – very common in Australia – of idiots building in a flood plain. It's not called a flood plain for nothing.

Agreed. And don’t get me started on which idiot decided to plant European crops in Australia (which is 90% desert) so that as soon as there’s a drought everything dies and farmers go bankrupt and our food supply is stuffed (again).

You mean like wine grapes?Wink
Actually, all those crops aren't European, they are from the Middle East originally, it's just that there there is at least some soil cover. Australia has none. Also, here, because of the large areas involved, stupid, stupid people thought it was a good idea to have vast areas of monoculture. Ans they decided to build houses all over the most arable land. Worst ideas ever. Worse even than Justin's genetic engineering.

No I mean like wheat and Barley that are very water thirsty. I agree about the houses. To add insult to injury new houses and housing suburbs have black roofs, Black ash-felt streets, are painted dark grey, have artificial turf outside and all trees are removed to build these suburbs. They’ve done tests and found suburbs are 10 to 15° hotter after the suburb is built than it was before.

The legal age for marriage of women in Australia was 14 until the 1940s. Even until the 1990s, women of 14 or 15 could marry with permission from parents. I had a friend who married at only just 15 during the 1970s. 'Minor' is not an immutable construct.

Possibly. But also possibly we would be wondering why Cally would lower herself to get involved with a dork like Justin.

Barley is NOT water hungry. It grows happily across the steppe in the Middle East without any more than the rain water at rates of less than 250ml pa. Wheat requires a bit more but not much. It's how we grow things here that's the problem.
And TOTALLY agree about the houses. Of course, those suburbs leave no room to grow trees.

No, I know that - and also that it is something of an obsession these days. When this episode was made, there would have been a less relaxed attitude than in the seventies, but we would not yet have got to the revulsion that is the general attitude now. Presumably the makers of the programme would have seen the animal experiments as the main ethical issue - but in practice it has not turned out that way., and that harms the episode.

Maybe not. But the younger a woman/girl is the more likelihood of an abusive/power imbalance situation. I’m more than happy with the current definition of legal age.

Going back to past agricultural decision-making... you Aussies didn't really get a good start, did you? Convicts dumped on the other side of the world had to use what they knew, sort of thing. That sort of history isn't easy to escape from. But at least Permaculture began in Tasmania!

It does harm the episode insofar as it's the ignorant and misinformed who make the most noise, not realising that they can lay no claim to the moral high ground.

Seeing how she dealt with Og, I don't think Servalan would approve of pets in her Federation. Probably banned them.

I suppose that one way of looking at it is that it does inform Justin's character. He is happy with starting a relationship with a young girl he is tutoring (presumably in her home, and under her father's nose), and he is happy to use questionable methods to create the radation-proof animals. In both cases he has no problem with ethical grey areas.

And I've attended the wedding of a 12 year-old girl and 13 year-old boy. It's all relative and depends on culture and mortality.

But I agree to bringing the marriageable age of women up to the same level as that for men. Actually, scrub that. Men are never old enough.Grin
