Is this the first episode where Servalan wears black? Yes, that's right. A theory was that she switched from white to black in mourning for her babies, but if that was the case she'd still be in white for this ep. There is no point being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes

Sorry people, I’m not well this week so I need to give the rewatch a miss. Sorry, to hear that Tyce. Get well soon! I'm still under the weather with Covid, but on the plus side it means I have to stay at home instead of running around doing errands for the in-law, so I can join the rewatch. So you have the plague Travisina? Sorry to hear that. I wonder how many from the con came down with it after. I hope it hasn't been too bad. My brother got it from going to a Bastille Day bash. ![]() It's a month since Forever Avon, and I think I got it more recently. In the past fortnight, I've been to the hairdresser, physiotherapist, hospital (with father in law), two restaurants, regular trips to supermarkets, local shops... could have come from any of those. I still wear a mask, but almost nobody else does ![]() That was the big thing I noticed in the UK – hardly anyone wearing masks, whereas it's still reasonably common here in Canberra. We always wear them in shopping centres. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

I remember that theory, but this blows it out the window. |

Fascinating - the episode is about a plague and most of what we're talking about are our own illnesses. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Avon is right, but he is being very unattractively cold-blooded in this episode. A little sympathy for Cally would not go amiss, I feel. |

The UK goverment is trying to pretend that it doesn't exist any more I checked the NHS website to see what the current regulations are for isolating etc. And there are none, apart from a vague 'avoid vulnerable people for ten days, and work from home if possible'. In other words, people are allowed to go out and about at will, regardless of level of contagion. Madness! There is no point being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes

And I do so love Gingka. Gingka is fascinating. One of the very few ethnic minority officers we see in the Federation, and he is complaining about being passed over. I have a theory that the pre-Federation regime practiced ethnic cleansing (explaining the number of planets with black leaders in Warlord - they were all banished from Earth). Since the Federation took over, a few have come back (Hal Mellanby, for example), but the Federation is still very white, and anyone else stands out a mile. |

Going back to the 'illnesses' discussion, I was watching this in bed the other day when I was feeling miserable and I found the masks rather interesting. They seem to be layers of gauze with a rubber thing from the top of a floor mop stuck on the front.

Probably a lot of in-fighting among Feds - survival of the fittest. Servalan probably encourages it, to improve her armies.

Somewhere back there, not sure if S1 or 2, there is at least one black officer wandering around Space Command. But Gingka would be passed over anyway because he is such a little s**t.

Before these were widely available (or indeed, available at all), I used to improvise with scarves etc. I prefer cloth ones, because the paper ones are so wasteful and bad for the environment. As for their efficiency - ah, who knows. There is no point being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes

The racial thing is probably unintentional (although an interesting sideline worth exploring further) and merely reflects the UK population/pool of available actors in the 70's.

Both feel like part of an ongoing quarrel that we are only seeing part of. Did it start in 'The Keeper'? They had quite a marital over blasting Travis' ship. Perhaps after 'Countdown'? Cally might have had hopes of a relationship, that were dashed by his obviously still having a thing for Anna. That might be behind her anger at his revenge project here. |

This may be the first time she's heard of Anna, though. I don't think Avon told anybody about his conversation with Del Grant - certainly not Blake, and very doubtful if he'd have shared with anyone else. The racial thing is probably unintentional (although an interesting sideline worth exploring further) and merely reflects the UK population/pool of available actors in the 70's. Absolutely. Plenty of 'differently-coloured' actors had appeared on the TV and in film in the UK before the late '70s. Maybe it was the casting director's choice. Ric Young had already appeared in several things. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Oh yes, this was very much a headcanon explanation of something that is easily explained in real life by casting practices - and the increasing employment of ethnic minority actors over the period covered by the series. |
