Avon is being way too jovial. I expect the director wanted quite the contrast between that and the psychopath he becomes hunting Vila to throw out of the airlock. I think that and the sort off light hearted interaction early on does make for a sudden shift later on. I know that my Grandson was quite shocked when he watched this episode. Or good Avon (cop) ,bad Avon (cop) I plan to live forever,or die trying.
