Rewatch Downunder Saturday 3rd February A5 The Web
AnneArthur
Watching this for the first time in 1978, Cally must have been very much an unknown quantity, and there must have been real suspense. I have never seen it like that - when I watched it I had already seen the third and fourth series, and knew that Cally was a valuable member of the crew. So I have always shrugged my shoulders and said 'Cally being taken over again' - which is not really what they expected.

Hello everyone. The funeral went as well as could be expected, I think - I hope Mum would feel that we did her proud. Not helped by my brother deciding that he couldn't be bothered to stay for the tea afterwards and landing me with the bill . . .However, it is a relief to have it done.

I'm glad about that AnneA. Sorry about having no choice as far as brothers go. Angry

I’m glad it went smoothly at least. Sorry your brother was far from helpful and dumped you with the bill. That’s a little unfair of him.

Going back to Vila's outfit, it looks as though he always wanted to run away and join the circus.

When I first 'watched' this I only had sound - another fan made me a set of cassette tapes (!) of the whole thing. I didn't see the thing in a bottle until many years later...

It's those meteorites again, only with dust: very stringy dust.

Hi, Anne. Glad the funeral wasn't too traumatic. Brother still being a twat, I see. Not a lot you can do about that. Take care of yourself - you need a rest. Enjoy The Web - but don't take it seriously. I think it's an attempt at a 'comedy' ep.

The excuse was that he had to get back to the cat, who was all alone. Of course, if he hadn't insisted on us spending the night before the funeral in an expensive hotel, the cat would only have been alone for a few hours . . .

I quite like this episode, although it's interesting how long this run of early episodes is - before we get to Servalan and Travis next week.

The thing in a bottle is the big let-down of this episode, I feel.

I rather like Geela and Novara's base, although it does look like a distant descendent of Rover from the Prisoner.

It's interesting how we all have different slices of it. I had everything up to the last ep of S3/C and didn't see the Terminal or S4/D for years.

Horizon has had a dozen new members already in 2024. Amazing, really. Nearly half a century later, people still discovering B7.

Well, the Federation world is very bleak, and I imagine that Deltas get the thin end of the functional clothing - very functional indeed. So it's perhaps not surprising that he is breaking out a little.

Yes, I like it a lot and you're right about the similarity to the Prisoner. I like their costumes very much, with all the silver. Miles Fothergill without it all is rather "So what?" Probably wouldn't recognise him.

I had the last two series - so it was called Blake's 7, but we never saw Blake.

Why would a Delta need anything better?

Some would say that functional would be more appropriate for a Supreme Commander than full evening dress . . .

Sorry Cally; you're the focus for everyone's agro this week. Actually, I was wondering how she managed to survive as a freedom fighter, if Auron mythology was always her frame of reference.

Oh look, a mini-Rover is following Blake. Is the Village perhaps run by the Auronar?

Maybe her limited knowledge is one reason she cosies up to Avon to begin with - he's expert in his field, and his cynicism seems so knowledgeable until you know him better.

I think that Geela and Novara are deliberately colourless, Obsidian. It's part of their artificial nature - they have no personality of their own. The silver outfits add a little glamour.

Yes, that's the thing. They are made of plastic (or similar) in every respect. It works well.

But why does everyone - even every alien they meet - have such a posh English accent?

As a corrective to series in which every alien has a standard American accent?
