Rewatch Downunder Saturday 25th November D9 Sand
AnneArthur
I'm fine, thank you. Had a day's supply teaching, yesterday, which leaves me in a slightly less dire financial position. And there is hope for more next week. And yes, it's cold - but also bright and clear. The workmen on the new house behind mine have reached the roof.

This is class brush-off. and no, I don't think he made it past first base. STILL have to finish my story with Rai. One day, when I'm not busy.

I'm sure they noticed the sand moving, but couldn't believe that it was alive.

I also think the duff poetry was deliberate. Don Keller reminds me of a W.H. Auden poem called Who's Who, about a 'great man', who, says the poem in shocked tones, loved someone very ordinary, who didn't appreciate him. And this is what Keller makes me think of - presumably a good officer, as he is in command, but nothing remarkable in any way - even a mediocre poet. But, inexplicably, the majestic Servalan's one great love.

I don't think he's so much her one great love, as he is possibly the first - and the one that got away (She would not be best pleased). I wrote a ficlet about it once.

Do you not think that this is a general policy on her part with young officers - suggest to them that they might be on a promise, then act on it as time, policy and inclination dictate?

I think that is probably what made him The One in her eyes - that he rejected her.

This planet can't be too big because the curved horizon is just THERE. A bit like the proverbial desert island (although that's an oxymoron) but without the sun and sea.

The sand is a very effective adversary - there's no bathos as there is with too many of the monsters. It's genuinely creepy, and a special effect that really works.

It is, especially the way the amount of it expands.

And I like it as a prop. It's been done extremely well.

I think she has them all sussed. She plays Avon like a fiddle in Terminal, and again in Gold. It's a real pity we never saw her with Blake.

Having been robbed of her revenge on Keller, She's now ready to take Tarrant.

That said, I think it doesn't really work with Vila - he just isn't interested. And she probably underestimates the women.

I love the dialogue between Servalan and Tarrant - she does know exactly what buttons to push.

Surely he was?

She did try with Vila in Traitor but it wasn't the time or place. And Vila uses the stand-up comedian to disassociate himself from certain kinds of action. And I agree with you totally about the women. They're not on her radar at all.

But it didn't work because Vila is straight-up scared of her. There's no tension at all, sexual or otherwise.

She'd had enough of Dayna (who's supposed to be a 'child' ) on Saren. And she probably found Soolin boring.

I think the reference to Sarcophagus is crass - but I do like that Vila is clearly still mourning Cally.

I love the way Servalan comes back from this apparently fragile moment to swindle the lot of them in Gold.

Both Avon and Vila are doing so only in different ways. The downward spiral is in train.

She had to - for her own self-respect. And she pointedly ignores Tarrant and flirts with Avon.
