Rewatch Downunder Saturday 12th August C7 Children of Auron

I think 'insane intergalactic war' is a bit harsh - the Andromedans invaded, after all. What did the Auronar want the humans to do, nothing?

Hello, I'm here - exhausted after a VERY intense week teaching at Keele, but I'm here. Hope you are both well. I see that I am going to have to start watching House of the Dragon, as it now has Tarrant in it.

Yay. All those hours I spent trying to get the News formatted to the SC's liking and uploaded, then re-formatted and uploasded to the thread didn't go to waste, then.

I did a summer school at Keele once. Hope it was fun as well as hard work.

It was great fun - but you are on the go from 9am to 9pm every day. I don't think I could have managed more than a week of it! Must be getting old . . .

What - the students didn't invite you to their parties (after 9pm)?

Cally deserved to be exiled? Servalan's right about the Aurons having narrow little minds.

Oh my gosh that Zelda woman looks like somebody we know? Now, who is it??

OOOOH! Derrel's walking on thin ice!

Yeah good point.

I don't really blame Deral and Gingka for being sceptical - this does seem a convoluted plan, even by Servalan's standards.

M1795537OCVirn
I'd like Cally (and/or Zelda) more and think she was believable as a freedom fighter if she didn't have such a soppy voice.

I don't think Aron comes out of this very well, as a society.

Think chess strategy. And it works.

'telepathy being the most obvious example' - I wonder what else the Auronar can do?

Well, she doesn't get the Liberator, her children are killed, she destroys Auron but not the Auronar, she loses a couple of her commanders and it doesn't really seem to benefit the Federation that much. That seems a very partial success.

Wink is exactly the right emoji for elegant, surely.

Servalan is SO good at finding ways of not telling the whole truth while not actually lying. Magnificent.

I think this the first time we see Servalan in black.

It would all have worked if people had done as they were told!

That's what I was thinking. Which means that the theory that the black was mourning for her dead children must be wrong.

Dum spiro, spero. But surely a really good plan would make allowances for people not doing what they were told?

Also, this episode says the cloning process produces the telepathy, but way back in the WEB telepathy was already something the Auronar could do.

Well, we can't expect consistency, I suppose.

Only if they were all mutoids. Which would make her too vulnerable since they can't think for themselves. So she uses people (preferably ones she has some sort of hold over) but doesn't trust anyone, and is angry, but not much surprised, when they fail her.

Not to mention Dawn of the Gods where telepathy is included in legends.

Yup! Also, are they Aurons, or the Auronar?

Yes, it is.

This disease is worrying, too. If it was introduced because of the Intergalactic War, how come the older Auronar /Aurons have developed an immunity?

I think the idea is that they are more immune to disease generally. But it is very sloppy.

That's such an odd episode - lots of interesting ideas, but lots of inconsistencies too. Very Blake's 7.

One thing Jan said at the Brit Sci Fi was that she love doing the episodes where she got to play somebody else during the episode - like Zelda and in Sarcophagus. Because as an actor, she loved chance to try play other characters.

M1795537OCVirn
Rather too much hilarity at Avon's parting shot, I thought. It wasn't that funny.

Still a great episode, despite it not making sense, either internally or within the B7 canon, and not really achieving anything except that everyone survives except the apparently expendable current Auron/ar population.

I wish Zelda had got a bit more development - or that we had seen their other siblings.

AnneArthur
I have to go now - I'm meeting someone for lunch. Thanks for the rewatch, and see you next week, when Avon finally gets his long-postponed revenge.

I don't bame her, she was a bit wasted as Cally! The writers never really got to grips with what being telepathinc could mean.

I always think this episode isn’t anywhere near what I would’ve imagined the Auron’s to be like. To me, they seem way too ordinary and boring. I think I would consider that they would be more deep and enlightened.
