Rewatch Downunder Saturday 23rd November D8 Games
M1795537OCVirn
Starting at 8.30pm Downunder and 10.30am in the UK.

D8 Games
In which someone actually gets the better of Servalan, in a way. Well, he gets out of this alive, and that takes some doing. But he didn't kiss her, so that's probably why.
Confusingly, Soolin wins the shoot-out against herself. (She's turning out to be quite an asset, isn't she? If the rest of them had been as sensible as she is, all this hassle might have been avoided). Anyway, we meet Belkov, his computer Gambit and some Feldon crystals. Everyone plays games (I'm not trying to be profound, it's what happens) and nobody really wins.
Servalan has some excellent lines, naturally, and Stratford Johns is a great guest actor. A winning combination, I thought.
"You're not sulking, I hope?"

Must be gay.

Yes very confusing, you would think she would be at least as good as herself! But she does lose in a shoot out against herself too, so it kind of evens out. :-/

She sure is, I can’t wait to see her in Season E.

and not one of them was Space Monopoly.

Belkov used the same type of guns for his game as Bayban chose to arm his crew:

Those guns must have been on sale at Spacemart on Rainbow Friday. Can't imagine Bayban bothering to pay for his, though.

Belkov probably didn't pay for his either.

1m: Something explodes, (I'm not sure what), to Avon's satisfaction. The rest of the gang think it's a big deal. A lot of people have died. Orac and Avon reveal "feldon"(?) is a material that is extremely powerful and the Federation wants it. The gang resolve to steal a bunch of the crystals... and our scene is set.

3m: Oh, we cut back to the ship and they kind of just repeat all the exposition from the first scene.

It's "Games" - a crime caper "big steal" type episode! You s-o-b, I'm in.

A wonder that the Feds haven't synthesised it. Oh, I forgot. Easier to steal than do any work.

YES! Something I've gotten out of these weekly rewatches with you all is all the potential recruits to the gang that never where. Flawed people who easily could've been scooped up by Blake. Belkov is one of those characters. Imagine if he had been on the London instead of say, Avon.

Belkov is far less of a team player.

8m: Avon's mole inside the Federation is in danger and gets teleported to the Scorpio.

I still don't understand the Scorpio. It has no functional difference to the Liberator. It even rather inexplicably has a teleport!

They all start off as selfish crooks. Belkov would've come round. Teaching Zen to play games, gambling with Vila, trying to woo Jenna.

Morning/evening everyone! Late as usual, I'm afraid - too long cowering under the duvet. If I'd got up at about 7 it would have been beautiful, I think - lots of gently falling snow - but the weather is warming up and the snow has turned to rain. A perfect day for staying in and watching Blake's 7.

It didn't travel as fast until they got Dr. Plaxton's special drive. And the teleport wasn't fully functional until our heroes came on board.

10m: Servalan shows up! She is wondering where all the money and crystals have gone.

Servalan: "No hand is a winning hand until it's played"

What a line!

Big Picture Servalan is my favourite version.

How about Gerren? How would a geologist work in our team?

14m: Garren brokers a zoom call with Belkov. It's thieves dealing with thieves.

This is a strong episode and I think it is partly because every faction in this story is feeling the pressure. It's sort of which rat can escape the sinking ship.

He'd be useful. Again, he might find himself doing more exercise than even a field scientist like him is used to.

Mixed. Two days' supply teaching, so some money coming in, finally. But I learned that a research project I was part of has not been funded, which is a big blow. You?

16m: Avon decides to pull the ship into an awkward orbit to trick Belkov

Avon: I don't mind playing games, but I do object when the opposition makes up the rules and decides to be the referee as well. I think we should try and even things up a bit.

This episode reminds me a bit of Iain M Bank's "The Player of Games", a book published in 1988. I wonder if he saw this episode (HIGHLY LIKELY)

This, in my mind, is where series 4 really picks up. As you say, a nicely twisty tale, and well executed by everybody. Definitely A if not A+.

Yes, although I do think the previous episode Assassin has a lot of good stuff going on... but it all clicks here

Money? What's that? I sell stuff but not enough to cover my rent anywhere.Sad
Here, my university wants the staff to withgo several years worth of pay rises in order to solve its financial problems. Staff not impressed. I hope they all disappear up their own fundaments. Don't care anymore. The uni made its bed, it can lie in it.

Agreed. Piri in Assassin is objectionable and the spider thingy risible, but I like the plot a lot and there are lots of good things in it.
