Rewatch Downunder Saturday 25th November D9 Sand
M1795537OCVirn
Start times: Downunder 8.30pm, UK 9.30am.

D9 SAND
In which we meet the luckless Chasgo, the charmless Investigator Reeve and the even unluckier Don Keller.
Tarrant, on the other hand, gets lucky (it has to be him, because nobody would believe Vila, and if 'twas Avon the series would end here) - very lucky, in fact, since he comes out of it alive. Meanwhile the Federation's search for a new preservative is successful, but proves pointless in the end.
Writer Tanith Lee's talent for great storylines and cutting dialogue shine through, thankfully without all the silliness of 'Sargophagus'.

Having dragged myself out of a warm bed on a frosty morning here in the UK, what do I find? The Aussies aren't here yet. Not that I expected anything else. But it's SAND! Come on, or I'll start without you.

Er... I'm still here. Officer Commanding, remember? A step up from Archives, where I started. Mind you, everyone else died...

Hi everyone, late as usual. Sorry.

Definitely one of my favourites - weird, but in a good way.

I'm sure they noticed the sand moving, but couldn't believe that it was alive.

I also think the duff poetry was deliberate. Don Keller reminds me of a W.H. Auden poem called Who's Who, about a 'great man', who, says the poem in shocked tones, loved someone very ordinary, who didn't appreciate him. And this is what Keller makes me think of - presumably a good officer, as he is in command, but nothing remarkable in any way - even a mediocre poet. But, inexplicably, the majestic Servalan's one great love.

The way She talks to Chasgo...reminds me of how she dealt with Rai, before he went rogue. Do you think She and he... no, surely not?

The poetry is deliberate, of course. It's done in the style of memorable first lines. They're still daft not to notice the sand slithering around.

How are you AnneA?

I'm fine, thank you. Had a day's supply teaching, yesterday, which leaves me in a slightly less dire financial position. And there is hope for more next week. And yes, it's cold - but also bright and clear. The workmen on the new house behind mine have reached the roof.

This is class brush-off. and no, I don't think he made it past first base. STILL have to finish my story with Rai. One day, when I'm not busy.

I don't think he's so much her one great love, as he is possibly the first - and the one that got away (She would not be best pleased). I wrote a ficlet about it once.

Do you not think that this is a general policy on her part with young officers - suggest to them that they might be on a promise, then act on it as time, policy and inclination dictate?

I think that is probably what made him The One in her eyes - that he rejected her.
