 45th Anniversary rewatch - A11 Bounty

The episode: Albert Eleven – Bounty * (Carry On Space Pirates) The date: Tuesday, March 14th, 2023 The time: 7.45pm UK time In which Blake and Cally abduct Sarkoff from Quex Park; the crew fall for the oldest smuggler’s trick in the book; and has Jenna turned traitor? And why do I always want to eat chocolate after watching this episode? Episode in a word: Politics. Character to cheer: It’s a good episode for Jenna, who manages to fool Tarvin for long enough, while picking off his men. Characters to boo: Blake, for smashing Sarkoff’s collection. It’s rather cruel, to say the least, especially the manner he does it in. Gan’s a bit stupid in this one as well. Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes. Recognisable Face: TP McKenna (Sarkoff) is a fabulous actor who has been in all sorts of things, including the 1988 Doctor Who serial, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. Best exchange: It’s a dialogue-rich episode, but I’m going for: SARKOFF: “Yes, my dear, you see, it's a, it's a paradox. He won because he is not the better man.” TARVIN: “What?” SARKOFF: “And yet by winning, it seems, he becomes a prince among people.” TARVIN: “Among MY people.” SARKOFF: “Does it matter which people, Tarvin? I've rewatched this episode a few days ago, and thought I'd share with you my thoughts, comments and questions regarding it. One of my favourite S1 episodes, 'cos there's a lot going on. It's definitely a story of two parts (2 Acts) the first being more interesting due to the location work at Birchington, Kent and Black Park I like the way Blake tries to convince Sarkoff to come with him, first by gentle persuasion then more direct means. "Tyce is coming with us so you will be left alone here," And then finally threatening to destroy Sarkoff's record collection. Is Tyce shorthand for Enticing? One of those literal character names that B7 writers sometimes seemed to like using. Not in the usual sexual sense - though I'm sure Vila would have taken a liking to her if their paths had crossed. More enticing to Sarkoff in getting him to return to Lindor to reunite his people. Who teleports Blake and Co. back to the ship in the nick of time? The teleport bay appears empty: are we meant to think it's Zen? The end of the episode featuring the farewells could be seen as a setup for a sequwl where we get to see how far Sarkoff has got in his aim of reuniting his people. I think this would have made a better story than some of the weaker S2 episodes such as Voice from the Past or Hostage. |
