Hi Anne. Good hols?

Not nearly long enough! But a very nice week doing nothing - although I've done quite a bit of writing on my B7 TNG story.

B7 TNG? Presuming a continuation, not a Trek crossover?
There was an excellent B7/STOS crossover, back in the day. I think it was called 'Strangers Among Us' - or might have been 'Port in a Storm'.

Strangers Among Us.

I am lot more sceptical now than I was about Foster's plans working, or leading to anything desirable.

LOL - say hi from us tea drinkers! It's a bit early for champers.

I do love this opening - fraught with suspicion and unease. Cameras. Tannoys. Drugged citizens mooching around.

If 'Blake' is the episode that really makes Blakes 7, this one runs it a close second. When I came back to Blakes 7 as an adult, borrowing the old videos from Cambridge publlic library, this was what hooked me again.

Even though it stands out as very different from the rest of the series (no Avon! no Liberator!), it's a fantastic piece of dystopian SF, and sets up Blake's background brilliantly. Arguably, you could start the series with 'Space Fall', but we need this to set up Blake, the Federation and why his fight matters so much.

I agree absolutely.

It's interesting that in this ep. we get to see explosive stuff coming out of the Federation blasters.

I don't know. Tsk, tsk; bleeding all over those lovely 1970s' flokati rugs.

I'll have to look that up! No, this is set 20-odd years post-Gauda Prime, involving, among other people, the sons of the Blake clone. It's big and baggy and I will probably never finish it, but it's fun to write.

I love fun-to-wrte stuff. I wrote a Vila novella in which I exorcised personal demons dating back to high school. It was wonderfully therapeutic, but having done its job, I don't feel compelled to inflict it on anyone else!

Blake's frayed cuffs tell us that this either he's from a lower social stratum (unlikely, given the accent and what we've learned about him), or that this is not a particularly successful totalitarian society. Repression is all.

I've not written any for ages - over the past couple of years I've done more editing than writing. And most recently, proofreading the Big Finish B7 hardbacks! - and just got burnt out.
New Year's resolution - to return to writing fan fic - starting with the monthly ficlet challenges...

Oh yes, that's it exactly! But it looks so very cheap - it adds to the shabby, over-stretched totalitarian society that you were talking about.

I think it's the over-the-top, cartoonish nature of the Dursleys' treatment of Harry that gets it past the critics.

Apparently not, it was an actual game show) - but honestly, what a bunch of wet lettuces. They spent most of the time in floods of tears - and the men were worse than the women!

That's the one. One episode would have been enough. Very exaggerated with loads of hand-wringing. Years back, a local comedy show parodied the popular expressions of shock-horror that accompanied the sort of premise written about in this novel.

Yes - they're all figures of fun (until it gets super serious in later books). Critics of JK Rowling nowadays are too busy piling on her for what they perceive as fatphobia, transphobia, antisemitism etc...
