UK Rewatch - D9 Sand
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Nine – Sand (Carry On Getting Sand In Your Pants)
The date: Tuesday, November 29th, 2022
The time: 7.45pm UK time

A reminder of the Season Derek drinking game, with one special addition for this episode:

Here’s the number of sips/swigs per each of these:
Avon is knocked unconscious 1
A scientist dies/is already dead (per scientist) 5
A member of the main cast wears the same costume as last week (per costume) 2
There’s the sequence (or part of the sequence) of Scorpio landing / taking off at Xenon Base 3
Vila drinks something red (per scene) 10
Tarrant falls in love 5
Soolin shoots someone (per person) 5
Slave says “sorry” (each mention) 1
Each mention of “Sleer” 2
Avon laughs manically and/or smiles inappropriately 5
There’s a downbeat ending in sharp contrast to the jangly end theme 10
The final shot of the episode includes Paul Darrow 3
A member of the main cast is killed or stunned (per cast member) 1 bottle of wine / 1 can of beer
For each grain of sand we see on Virn 1

Back to the episode, and the crew go to the seaside on Virn, only to find that Servie has had exactly the same idea; Dayna is kissed not by a Hugbot, but rather by a bullet; Tarrant's taste in women moves on from a whiny assassin to a psychopath, albeit the most sexy psychopath in the galaxy; and in a twist, the scientist of the week is dead well before the episode has even started.

Episode in a word: Lovers.
Character to cheer: Servie. This episode shows her at her most vulnerable, unless she was manipulating Tarrant throughout, which is a very real possibility.
Character to boo: We asked Dayna Mellanby for her thoughts on this one, and she suggested Del Tarrant.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week: Yes.
Recognisable Faces: Stephen Yardley (Reeve) went on to play Ken Masters in “Howard’s Way”. Meanwhile, Daniel Hill (Chasgo) was one of the lead characters in the 1990s comedy “Waiting For God”, although he’s been in just about everything.
Best exchange: SERVALAN: “Oh, Tarrant. I'm just the girl next door.” TARRANT: “If you were the girl next door, I'd move.” SERVALAN: “Where would you move to, Tarrant?” TARRANT: “Next door.”

Blake's 7 will return in “Carry On Photocopying.”
Vote Og.

There was a young gallant named Tarrant.
Who fancied himself a Knight Errant.
Yet the dominant male in this sand enclosed jail
For Servalan falls incoherent.

And yes, this is what the House at the End of the Cul de Sac (with a nice shiny kitchen and partly painted one) looks like! Even my neighbour's garage door (on the right) is the correct colour!!!!

Do you think a certain Huggie Bot has been spying on us? We got the same drawing of our house recently. Perhaps I should complain to Google Earth? -Actually, great work, Herr Hugbot.

Fantastic weekend, exhausted, happy and here to say Blake's 7 is alive and well. We had so many comments on our t-shirts, badges, etc. Spent a king's ransom at the Big Finish table and schmoozed with Fraser Hines, Wendy Padbury, Sophie Aldred and fell for Stephen Noonan and Tim Treloar! What a great con!

Not so much 'home' as my latest posting in the service of the Federation. Not an easy one, because of the sand, of course, but we're researching ways to control and use it.
