'Your helplessness brings out my sadistic streak'. Nicely observed, I think - although it's not just helplessness, IMO, it's that Vila seems so content to be helpless, and even to stress how feeble he is. There's clearly an evolutionary advantage to being like that, like baby humans. Yes, and in Vila's case it is conscious, I think. He's too small to be a bully, so he survives by being harmless, amusing and useful. |

Helplessness is OK in baby humans, in someone who's supposed to be adult, it's irritating. (Or does that show my sadistic streak?) NO, just realistic. There are lots of adult humans who trade on helplessness to get them through life, just not as overtly as Vila does, or at least, is seen to do because we're focussing on him. Women who rely on capturing sugar daddies do it and, let me tell you, they do still exist. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

I keep looking at the thing around Cally's neck. It looks like a medical instrument – or sugar tongs.

And Vila's 'personality' is just as manipulative as anyone else's, playing on their sympathies. He's more than capable of looking after himself in whatever way he needs to. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Tanith Lee uses the Richard III gambit in both her stories. One person threatens to kill another, and the other says 'go on then', knowing that it won't happen. |

How does Avon destroy the ring, though? It should take more than just tossing it away to get rid of it. |

How does Avon destroy the ring, though? It should take more than just tossing it away to get rid of it. Good question. As with all these things, we assume that everything is resolved after the episode finishes – as in, when do they drag away the bodies. One hopes that he stomped on it with his nice Anello and Davide boots. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

Why should Dayna be used to revolting thoughts? Vila having a little dig back at her, I think. I don't really see why ORAC being back on his feet IS a revolting thought, though. |

OK, it's over ( for another year). But it's Ultraworld next. And I bet even that is somoeone's favourite episode. Oh, well. Thanks for a lovely rewatch, all. See you next time.

But, as to the ring, I suppose we have to assume that if it is no longer on Cally, it is useless, and that Cally now has no desire to put it on again. |

I think that justifies what I said about her earlier! Never doubted it for one minute. She goes from fairly innocent-looking girly thing to trouble on wheels in no time. I expect she was a wild child – had to be, given all the weapons she created. Being on Libby enabled that side of her to come to the fore. Don't philosophise at me you electronic moron.

It's not a favourite - but it's different, and interesting. I find the giant brain in Ultraworld hard to take seriously. Not one of the better episodes. |

Hi All, I've just caught up with the thread - interesting discussions as ever, and sorry to have missed it. Not least because while taking mother-in-law to the bank and dentist, I managed to get a parking ticket ![]() ![]() ![]() Sigh. No good deed goes unpunished. I love Sarcophagus. I love its weirdness, the way it's written and directed, the superb character interactions. Agree that it's a haunted house story (or rather, haunted ship). Those of you who've not yet read any of Tanith's books, allow me to recommend the following: 1. Kill The Dead. Although it's been denied, the characters are based on Avon and Vila, or rather, Paul and Michael. Even the names of the characters: 'Parl Dro' (which is what Paul's signature looked like), and 'Myel'. And she dedicated it to 'Valentine'. Not based on Avon? Yeah, right. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...l_the_Dead 2. The Silver Metal Lover. Heartbreaking beautiful love story; I re-read it every few years when I'm in the mood for a really good wallow. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...etal_Lover 3. When the Lights Go Out. Annoyingly, I loaned this to a producer I was working with, thinking he might like to acquire and develop it (we were working on Sugar Rush at the time). And I never got it back. It's dark and spooky, very atmospheric. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...hts_Go_Out There is no point being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes
