CRUD CLUB SH*TE NIGHT: Plan 9 from Outer Space
Cygnus Bazza
What’s the worst film you’ve ever seen?
Imagine one that’s even worse than that.
In fact, imagine a film that's a bit worse than the worst film ANYONE’s ever seen.
Now imagine watching it on Wednesday 7th October, half a half-hour before 8 in the evening. (That's 19.45)

To misquote AC/DC, If You Want Crud, You’ve Got It. And to misquote U2, it’ll be Sunday Cruddy Sunday. But on a Wednesday. Because, this time, Crud Club’s going to batter brutally a movie widely touted as the most pitiful ever made. To misquote Bob Dylan, there’ll be Crud on the Tracks.

What are we watching? The legendarily inept Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957)

Why are we watching it? Because I can’t find Night of the Lepus. And Bela Lugosi’s in it, albeit posthumously. Which is ironic, when you think about it. Vampira's in it too.

What can I expect? The usual. Aliens. Zombies. Threat to humanity. Key character called Paula.

How long is it? Only 78 minutes. But it'll take your self-respect an awful lot longer than that to recover.

Is there a link? Not to reality, there isn’t.

I mean on YouTube... Oh, that. Yes. https://archive.org/details/plan.-9.-...pace.-1957 (Colourised version, but at least it should be ad-free.)

And in the unlikely event it goes well? We'll get OSP to track down Plans 1 to 8. SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmile

Yes, we permanently offer temporary membership.
As for our stringent initiation test...if you can find the internet, you're in.

I will go with the premise, but actually Plan 9 isn't that bad a film in the scheme of things. The glaring things are scenes starting out in daylight and ending in night time, very loose grave markers and Tor Johnson having endless trouble trying to rise out of the grave. That and the obvious radio announcer alien who spits out his lines like he's advertising washing machine soap. I can probably think of a dozen films worse than Plan 9, but at least with this film you can be entertained and have a good laugh at someone's chiropractor walking around trying to emulate Bela Lugosi and doing so badly at it. I'm really looking forward to this one and I do hope TT joins us. It's fun!

To quote this movie...

Stupid humans, Stupid Stupid Stupid.

First saw this with friends at age eleven or so on the Channel 2 afternoon matinee. Even at age eleven, we were laughing hysterically at the continuity errors.

IMDB lists 48 errors in a 78 minute movie, and I think that is a monstrously conservative estimate.

This Ed Wood gem makes Animals look like Citizen Kane.

It is quite staggeringly bad, so incredibly bad it passes clean through the black hole of badness and comes out in a parallell universe as entertaining.

That was 'The Creping Terror' we did last year if memory serves. This one is the best Ed Wood film every made, and that ain't saying a lot. Bela Lugosi, posthumously, someone's chiropractor subbing for the late Mr. Lugosi, hub cap UFO's, really bad scenery, bad actors, especially Swedish wrestler made actor, Tor Johnson and scary Vampira, the LA horror film host with a very scary waistline... oh, it's a classic piece of dreck.

Gutted I'm missing this classic, since I'm going down the Poole v Scunthorpe play-off final tonight and hopefully see Scunny (my adopted team while Oxford were shut, and one I'm still involved with) win a league title

As the days get shorter, perfect autumnal viewing. This one’s guaranteed to make any evening feel a hell of a lot longer.

OK, I'm ready. Not sure why, or what to expect, but I believe all your (collective) hype. This is going to be BAD.

It is the Woodest of all the Ed Wood films. And that is saying something.

It needs a narrator
It has stock footage unrelated to the story
It has a radio announcer as the main villain
It features a local chiropractor standing in for Bela Lugosi
Continuity? Never heard of it.
And.... just when you thought it couldn't get worse, this version is colorized.

This’ll be a trial. I mean a thrill. Ed Wood identified the very best actors available – then used completely different ones.

This is a rare example of something so bad it's enjoyable.

That's quite close to a mission statement for Crud Club.

The opening credits offer sundry gems. ‘Co-starring Dudley Manlove’ must be where TT got his porn star name. And we’re just a full-stop away from Jedward getting credited as Executive Producer.

Even though it's the neighboring state, Rockford, MI is 140 miles. (America is Big)

If Edward Wood would, would Edward Woodward?

Brad
Grave Robbers from Outer Space.... the working title, in true Ed Wood form, they didn't reshoot the prologue when they changed the name of the film.
