Although it's a bit obvious, my thoughts turned this year to April Fools. Here are some quotes:
On April Fools Day, believe nothing, trust no one - just like any other day.

"Some people can’t be fooled on April Fool’s Day because they were fooled too many times during their entire lifetime.” – Akash B Chandran

"Who needs a day for the fools? I'm surrounded by them all year"

As for Shakespeare:
Fools in Shakespeare often seem to function as permanent, or ‘professional’ Lords of Misrule. They are often employed by the monarch, or the higher status characters, and because they have some sort of skill - they tell jokes, they sing songs, they offer honest opinions, they are free from the normal social order. So long as they don’t displease their employer, they are free to come and go as they wish....

So...

In Blake's 7, who is wise, and who's the fool?

"You're not sulking, I hope?"

Paula
As we've been told often enough, a fool knows everything and nothing. Which reminds me of a certain world leader not too far away from me as I type, but then shhhhh! we aren't supposed to talk of real life here. Happy April Fool's everyone.

Well here goes.

Fools Rush In

“I never recognised the fool...”
Avon stared at himself in the mirror of his cabin.
He was still tired and he still hurt; in more ways than one.
So much for being clever and so wise.
How many times had he called Vila a fool?
How many times had he belittled Gan? A giant of a man who had given his life so the others could escape.
Now it was his turn to look foolish.
And both Tarrant and Cally had witnessed it.
Avon looked at himself again.
How could he have been taken in by Anna?
He knew that he had been betrayed, but not by whom.
Even when they questioned him about who else was helping him in the great Bank Fraud, he had kept his mouth shut and then the interrogation had stopped.
Cygnus Alpha had been his destination, until Blake had crossed his path.
Yet it had never occurred to him to question how or why he had been caught.
Maybe it had been Tynus. He was always looking after his own skin; but that meeting on Fosforon had eliminated his involvement.
But even Del Grant was convinced that Anna had paid for her involvement with Avon with her life, and Grant had vowed revenge.
Maybe he should have realised then that all was not as it seemed.
Someone had gone through a great deal of trouble to persuade other interested parties that Anna Grant had died under torture. Even her own brother was convinced of that.
What was the saying?
Love is blind?
Fools rush in where wise men never go?
Yes, those words were so true in his case.
And he felt foolish right now.
He stared at himself again and allowed himself a wry smile.
It was no good. He would have to face the others some time.
And now would be a good as a time as ever.
He turned away from the mirror and took a deep breath, steeling himself for whatever reception awaited him.
Switching off the light, he stepped through the open door, leaving behind any foolish memories of Anna and facing the future a little wiser.
Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold!
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!!

APRIL SHOWER

“Oh to be in England, now that April’s there… But, on balance, I’d rather be in Bermuda. You’re looking rather wistful, Avon. Pining for the verdant pastures of old Blighty?”

“No, Vila. Pining’s for wimps. I don’t…’pine’. I merely…’reflect’. Oh and scheme. But since you ask, April was the name of a girl I once went out with. April Fool. That was her name.”

“Really? Was it a blind date? I went on a blind date once. Well, it was a blind date once she’d put the bag on my head. Not really a vote of confidence. Said she didn’t want to be seen in public with a…with a…oh, what was it now…with a ‘loose’ something…”

“Loose cannon?”

“Nope.”

“A loose…end? That’d make sense. Well, the ‘end’ bit, anyway.”

“No…no…neither of those. Let’s think! Yes! Got it. ‘Loser’! That was definitely it! She said she didn’t want to be seen out in public with a ‘loser’. But enough about me...”

“Couldn’t agree more, Vila…”

“Let's talk about you and April Fool. Have you seen the film ‘Grease’? I did. Asked for my money back. No sign of the Parthenon, or the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassai. Anyway…April Fool! Come on, Avon! (Singing) Tell me more, tell me more…did you get very far?”

“No. Putney.”

“No, I mean did you get to home base?”

“Yes, in fact we went past Homebase, which used to have branches up and down the country. She worked parttime in the paint department. Not that I’d ever seen her there. I used to go there a lot, though. Very handy if I needed strippers at short notice.”

“Blimey.”

“Paint strippers, Vila.”

“If you say so, Avon. And how many times did you and April go out?”

“As I told you, just the once. Try and keep up. On April the 1st. At least, I always assumed April Fool was her name. Maybe it was just an April Fool. I met her on line.”

“Via computer?”

“No, at a train station. The Blake Line. The one that replaced the Circle Line. Same route. Round and round in endless bloody circles. But handy for the Hammersmith & Cally Line. I’d just split up with my previous paramour, May Knott. Mind you, she was two-timing me. She was in a same-sex relationship with someone of the same sex. June Whigfield.”

“June WHIGFIELD? Don’t you mean ‘Whitfield’?”

“No. She met her on a Saturday night. At Disco Tra-visco. The same night I went down there with Jan Ewery.”

“Crikey, Avon. Never realised you were such a floozy. More of this sort of talk and I’ll be needing a cold shower.”

“Which would be appropriate, given the date today.”

“Let’s check the calendar… Hey! Who put all these holes in it?”

“That’s the colander, Vila. HERE’s the calendar… And look – yesterday was March the 31st. So today is the first day of….”

“April! April Shower Brings May Flower.”

“Yes, I went out with both of them as well”.

“Really, Avon?”

“No. Not really, Vila. I’m making it all up, of course. Look at the date!”

“April the…first! April Fool’s Day! You got me there, Avon!”

“Where? There???”

“OUCH!”

“Or…THERE?”

“DOUBLE OUCH! WHY ARE YOU HITTING ME?”

“Well, you know what they say, Vila. First of the month – pinch, punch, smack in the mouth!”

“Ouch. That hurt. Just like the fact that you’ve not been telling me the truth. Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”

“You mean?”

“Yes. Why July to me???”
