UK Rewatch - B2 Shadow (Tuesday, April 7th)
trevor travis
The episode: Barney Two - Shadow (Carry On Space Mafia)
The date: Tuesday, April 7th, 2026
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which there’s so much going on in a terrific episode. The major two plot strands are Blake finding himself on the wrong side of morality and not giving a jot about it; and a malign influence taking over Orac. While this is going on, Vila has the thrill and hangover of a lifetime, and will be lucky to finish the episode with his teeth intact and not part of a necklace.

Episode in a word: Moon-discs!
Characters to cheer: Gan, for showing that he has a conscious and there are levels he would prefer not to stoop to, such as getting caught up with the Space Mafia. Of course, Blake dismisses his arguments and pushes on regardless. In some ways, it’s a precursor of what happens again in three episodes’ time, this time with tragic consequences. Oh, and also Cally, for regaining much of her original spirit here – especially when she holds Space City to ransom to free the others. It’s great to see these two characters given something a bit more meaty to do, at last. Bravo Chris Boucher!
Character to boo: Sorry, Vila, while I think you’re terrific, this is not your finest hour – the blame for Hanna’s death lays firmly at your door.
Avon/Cally ‘Shipping Alert: “Whose is this?” demands Avon. He stops in his tracks when he finds out the Moon Disc belongs to Cally.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Karl Howman (Bek) played Jacko the painter, the lead character in the 1980s sitcom Brush Strokes. It was actually a pretty decent comedy, although it went on for a few series too long.
Best exchange: Lots of brilliant dialogue in this one, but it’s impossible to ignore: VILA: “Where are all the good guys?” BLAKE: “You could be looking at them.” AVON: “What a very depressing thought.”

Blake's 7 will return… Carry on Mister Smooth
Vote Og.

It’s 19:45 Earth Standard Time, and here is the news from Earth Dome One. I am your in-studio reporter, Lee R. Pantsonfire.

Our top story tonight: Is Blake running drugs?

Blake’s ship was reportedly docked at Space City, better known as the Satellite of Sin. Truly an odd place to find someone claiming to be a crusader against the ‘evils’ of the Federation. As most of our listeners know, Space City is also rumored to be the headquarters for the mythical Terra Nostra crime organization.

Although Space City is Neutral Territory, Pursuit Ships were scrambled, and followed Blake to the planet Zondar. There, though Blake had gone, they found a drug manufacturing facility Space Command believes was the heart of Shadow Drug Operation. Said facility is now destroyed, fulfilling a long standing promise from the President to end the threat of Shadow.

We reached out to the President’s office for comment. A Spokesperson for the President stated that the Terra Nostra remains nothing but a myth, and that the Administration is not surprised to find out that Blake was somehow involved in the Shadow Operation.

In unrelated news, the Administration announced a new luxury tax aimed at addressing recent budget shortfalls.

Stay tuned for our 20:00 movie, a special remastered episode of everyone’s second favorite Science Fiction series, Babylon 5, in which Sheridan visits the planet Xha Ha Dum.

I think the report from LRP shows how stupid it was for Blake to even consider this scheme. The negative publicity is not what freedom fighter needs.

Indeed. Of course, it is LRP's job to cast everything Blake does as the darkest possible motive.

I recall on my first viewing of B7, I thought someone needed to arrange a teleport accident for Avon, as he was always criticizing and rarely helping. On subsequent viewings, I came to realize that most of Avon's critiques hit the bullseye, and it was Blake who had lost sight of the forest for the trees.

That’s why freedom fighters will always face negative publicity, so they shouldn’t worry about it. Just do what is right, and let the outcome take care of itself.

Is it "right" to try and join with Terra Nostra?

Is it "right" to try and join with Terra Nostra?

BLAKE: We're going to use them, Lorna, not do business with them.

Which is the opposite of "join" in a sense.

BLAKE: We chose the wrong approach, that's all.

Even after the main message of the episode:

BLAKE: To have total control, you must control totally. Both sides of the law. The Terra Nostra, the Federation: two sides of the same power. The same man of power.
AVON: Ironic, isn't it? We were hoping to use the Terra Nostra to attack the Federation only to discover that it is already being used to support it.

There are still possible approaches.
Is it right to shop without checking if the seller is a member of the mafia?

So the only wrong is not to think.

Let's hear it from the source.....

BLAKE We chose the wrong approach, that's all.
GAN Is that all? I thought maybe we'd chosen the wrong people to get involved with.
AVON WE chose the wrong approach?
BLAKE I chose the wrong approach. Does it matter?
AVON Yes, it does.
BLAKE All right, Avon. You were right and I was wrong.

Blake is 100% wrong. If only for the fact you can't make deals with those kind of people. Just as bad as the Federation...wait a minute!!......

I'm waiting for someone to say 'On our way Home' like Robert the Robot often said on Fireball XL5. That, or starting a discussion of great British sci-fi and by that I of course mean Blake's 7. Now, that would be a thrill.
