A bit topical this one, on the eve of the release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

I've gone for the original, because I remember the TV premiere on ITV in around 1982 or 1983 and it was mind-blowing. I had an orange coat at the time, and after that, it was my Luke Skywalker coat.

Attack Of The Teddy Bears (I'll say it before Brad does) is my second favourite Star Wars film.

I saw Star Wars on the Saturday just before Jan 2nd 1978.
I left the cinema totally unimpressed....
..and then a character from the new BBC Sci Fi Series looked at the camera and said...'I'm coming back.'
A week later...
...and a rather nice computer expert appeared!
The rest, as they say, is history Grin

Sue, but the original Star Wars is good for the same reason B7 is good... it's all about the characters.

There's orphaned Luke Skywalker, who yearns to get away from the middle of nowhere, where his uncle and aunt have brought him up, and then has to deal with their deaths. He's left with nothing.

There's Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has become a recluse, until Luke gives him new hope.

There's Han Solo, a wheeler-dealer who thinks he's in it just for the money, until Luke and Leia show him another way.

It all comes together beautifully at the end, when Han comes to the aid of Luke, just as Darth Vader is on Luke's tail, and then Peter Cushing gets blown to smithereens.

I wish George Lucas would have stuck to his original very dark ending to "Return Of The Jedi".

Darth Vader takes off his helmet and dies, and then Luke picks up the helmet, puts it on and becomes the new Vader!!

I went for the original Star Wars film. I can't remember much about the others.

I voted 'other' because Star Wars: A New Hope was so ground breaking, breathtaking, amazing - and then Empire was that very rare thing, a sequel that was just as good or actually better - darker, more adult, with a fantastic cliff hanger ending. But without the first Star Wars, we wouldn't have Empire, so I love them equally.

Empire (Not the action thrill ride of SW, but deeper in character).
Star Wars (Saw it 22 times before it was called New Hope, so it's Star Wars to me)
The Clone Wars animated series. (Better than most of the movies)
Return of the Jedi (By far the weakest of the original three, but still very good)

Now there is a BIG gap in quality of story telling.

Revenge of the Sith
Attack Of The Clones...
Phantom Menace

rojkerr1
Empire, dark scary, disturbing, then original, Clones

Still, no such film. There's one called "Star Wars", however.

I don't go for Lucas's retcon to try to change the name of the movie.

But that's what it says on the scrolling whatsit in the opening minute of the movie! Always has. Caused a bit of bemusement in the cinema when I went to see it in 1978.

Just on the scroll, though.

The big title on the main sequence is just "STAR WARS" Wink

I'm afraid I felt no empathy at all for the characters.
I left the cinema that night saying that it had put Sci Fi back 30 years.

In 1978 it did NOT say A New Hope, it merely said Star Wars... Trust us, Paula and I saw it 22 times in the summer of 78. The version in your picture is clearly the work of heretics. In that version, Gredo shoots first... Anathema. Heresy. Cats and Dogs living together....

LOL, Brad!
Okay, I didn't see it 22 times in one summer - though I did keep going back to see it as many times as I could afford. And me & my siblings used to have lightsabre duels over the dinner table (including sound fx) to the great annoyance of my parents. And I had a major falling out with my then-best-friend, who thought the film was 'dumb'. Our friendship was doomed from that moment.

But anyway wasn't the film originally called The Star Wars? I do have some recollection of that.

Until 1999 and the first of the prequels, the name of the films were:

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi

(Not sure if it was The Star Wars for a bit, Travisina, it could have been. I didn't see the first film until the TV Premiere in 1982 - I was too young to see it at the cinema in 1978 Wink )

All this episode nonsense didn't come about until The Phantom Menace. Yes, it said Episode 4, 5 & 6 on the scrolls, BUT that was ALL. It wasn't actually in the titles of the films.

George Lucas tried to retcon the films. Fortunately, I have the DVD of the original films, rather than the remasters, where lots of the effects have been touched up, extra sequences added, etc.
