Tyce-con II - in 2025 - 1 Mar & 2 Mar
Joe Dredd
We learned Adrienne was born in Queensland, moved to Canberra, then studied a double-honours degree in English and Drama at Bristol University. She began writing a newspaper column, "London Bird's Diary" for the Sydney Morning Herald, which was telexed to Australia from the Reuters building in Fleet Street.

Many articles by - and about - Adrienne can be found in the Trove newspaper archives.

Exeter festival will provide a stage talk with Adrienne Burgess that is as good as going to a play. Her face is animated and her clipped voice expressive - understandable enough as Adrienne is a student in the drama department of the University of Bristol.
The daughter of Mr and Mrs L. K. Burgess, of Red Hill, she is home in Canberra on holidays. At the moment Adrienne is elated. Her translation of the play 'I Am Not The Eiffel Tower' from French into English has been selected for presentation in December at the Union of Students drama festival in Exeter.
Adrienne, who saw the Rumanian play two years ago, said, "It is a very funny play and a topical one with references to the Bomb and Vietnam, It has tremendous colour and is a bit flower-childish.
"There are eight translations, so I just got in on time. The author, Ecaterina Oproiu, sent me the French version".
The three winning plays at the festival will have a three-week run on the West End of London.
Against odds of 149 to one, Adrienne was admitted to the Bristol drama department last year. She says the curriculum is a full one and that it allows the student to develop originality.
"We have an average of eight essays, in the ten week term. Each has a minimum length of 2,000 words though an essay can stretch to 5,000.
"In the English department there are no set topics. Instead you are told that a certain period will be studied and lectures are held mainly to inspire you".
Drama is a fairly general course and includes a study of plays dating from 500BC to the 20th century. There is also a visual aids class which looks at the development of costumes and theatre buildings. Right from the beginning, students take part in plays.
"We had eight productions last year, some of them extending beyond the terms", said Adrienne.
"We often work with postgraduate students who come along for diploma courses or to write a thesis".
There are about 90 students in the drama department - among them is Peter Finch's daughter Anita.
For the first two terms of last year, Adrienne lived in one of the halls of residence which she described as "abysmal". "Too many restrictions - for instance, you were not allowed to have men in your room after seven at night".
On her way home to Australia she stopped in Greece to look at the Greek National Theatre and in Singapore, where she saw a Chinese street opera. Adrienne docs not plan to be active in theatre productions in Canberra during the summer holiday. Instead she will be preparing for second year at the University of Bristol.

After the birth of her daughter, Adrienne wrote "Fatherhood Reclaimed", which was published in 1997.

This led to Adrienne's long-term involvement with Fathers Direct, now known as Fatherhood Institute.

Here is a video of Adrienne making a presentation on parental leave:

Adrienne didn't know how the BBC make-up people managed to style Hanna's hair for "Shadow". I'm still choosing to believe it was using old Aussie schoolroom favourite, Clag.

Clag. Just the name is enough to make your hair stand on end.

Thank you for the Stamina award, Joe. There's nothing like getting up in the middle of the night to discuss Blake's 7. It was wonderful seeing old and new friends alike at Tyce Con. So glad Adrienne finally caught up with you all. We met her and her husband years ago at a con in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Nice couple. All the best to everyone and a big thank you to our Administrator, Virn (Evelyn), for setting up the Zoom link. It was a blast!

Thank you Joe. Best Subversive Idea, I like that!
It was for that very reason they deported me from the mother country to the prison colony of Cygnus Australia 20 years ago.
I look exactly as Avon reasoned I would.

Thanks, Joe! Technical problems? I suspect it was a rebel attack gone wrong, like they always do.
Let's just say that on Friday afternoon the phone people suddenly decided to do work on the local network, leaving us without any internet at all. EEEK!!

After frantic efforts, which continued up to almost 'start' time, we were able to steal some wifi from elsewhere. Don't tell anyone, though. And it was definitely worth it.
Many thanks to all who contributed. Loved seeing you all, especially Joe proving he was Downunder.

We must do this again sometime! Zoomcon???

The conversation was just getting interesting when it dropped out - Terry Nation's writing abilities (and I totally agree with TT, character consistency plays second place to the needs of the plot) plus the assumption that nothing would be seen again. Uncle Tel apparently re-used a script for one ITC series as a 'new' submission for another without anyone noticing, and presumably pocketing a second fee for simply typing it out again with the names changed. One day the two episodes were repeated back-to-back, much to the bemusement of the continuity announcer afterwards.

He wasn't alone, however. You can, for example, see Vince Powell recycling sequences from sitcoms he scripted with Harry Driver, such as "George & the Dragon", in later shows such as "Bless this House" and "Odd Man Out" (with John Inman).

That said, TV has a voracious appetite and many a comedian working their way up and down the working mens' clubs found one TV appearance meant a set of jokes they could repeat at every new venue was now seen across the country in one showing, and consequently old hat and no longer useable anywhere.

What a weekend! Tyce-con II was not only the biggest Blake’s 7 convention in the southern hemisphere this year but also had a 33% increase in it’s attendance from Tyce-con I. Yes a 33% increase, can you believe it! An amazing 4 people turned up to Tyce-con II that’s 1 person more than the 3 people who attended Tyce-con I. That’s the power of publicity and promotion for you!

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, attended and Zoomed in.

In particular many thanks to Obsidian (and her husband) for using Gambit as inspiration. With this theme they:

• transformed my livingroom into the Krantor’s Boudoir complete with terylene curtains, seating areas covered with white and gold cloth and a dozen throw pillows - and most importantly of all Pataki Cakes with the distilled venom of a local reptile, and
• transformed half of my dining room into Chenie’s bar (some fabulous carpentry there) with an assortment of Blake’s 7 drinks and impressive B7 glasses.

Obsidian also:
• displayed an amazing framed photo with eight B7 signatures and three framed costume sketches
• set up a display table
• created a tshirt display area, and
• organised a ‘for sale’ table.

In addition, Obsidian ‘very stunningly’ came dressed in Servalan’s Gambit red-dress complete with red frill neck collar.

Thank you also to my friend who stole some Greek columns from somewhere (or perhaps he became an archaeologist just a few weeks back and dug them up, I’m not sure, but either way) he did such a good job I will here-on in, refer to him as ‘Column Man’.

Column Man kindly consoled Krantor’s cat while Servalan was busy on her ‘intercom’.

Taking our Tyce-Con II attendance to record breaking numbers was the lovely Cashaverre. So nice to meet you Cashaverre and also thank you for bringing pastries – Yum.

Just FYI - I turned the other half of my dinning room into Space City’s Casino complete with a mini Orac. (Mini Orac courtesy of Column Man). Twenty-five Casino Chips each (worth 1,000 Credits) were included in the Tyce-con II complimentary entry ticket price. Obsidian’s luck was in as she amazingly chose the winning Roulette number of Black 20. I paid Obsidian out with bragging rights to the value of 25,000 Credits.

Also just for those who may have missed it, I added a ‘Wall of B7’ and a ‘Door of Sally Knyvette and Jan Chappell' in my loungeroom.

Sadly not all of you could attend in person so we are also very, very grateful to M1795537OCVirn for organising our Zoom gathering.

Many thanks to Joe Dredd for his lovely posts about Adriene Burgess and the ‘con awards’. I won the Purplest person award. Yay. Did anyone notice what was on my purple t-shirt??

Last but certainly not least a huge thank you to Adriene Burgess. It was so incredibly lovely talking to Adriene, she is so nice and was so happy to chat. We were really honoured. I apologise to Zoomees who missed out on chatting to Adriene due to a timing issue. ☹

I had a ball at Tyce-con II (can I say that or is it self serving??). Anyway I hope everyone else had a ball also. 😊
